Becoming Led Zeppelin Reviews

Apr 21, 2025

Interesting for a die hard zep fan but not a very good documentary. The interviews are boring and there's not a mention of the tiniest bit of sordid detail! The best part is when they show their childhoods, that caught my attention but otherwise double meh.

The tales of touring life and debauchery have been covered in countless books and documentaries. The chance to hear from each of the surviving members in a neutral space about the bands formation with a singular focus on the music only was refreshing. Especially nice were the band’s reactions to listening to one of the only surviving interviews with John Bonham. It was a simple idea and came off beautifully. An all encompassing documentary would be difficult to pull off. And none of these fellows want the times that were embarrassing or sordid to be rehashed. We all know what the lives of decadent rock stars was like in the 60s and 70s. It’s a story that doesn’t need a retelling. I believe the only reason they all agreed to sit for this interview was because of the format and focus. It gave them a space to talk freely about the joy of making music, finding each other and creating something that has lasted and resonated for generations. I was born in 69. Fell in love with Zeppelin growing up and as able to share this with my 18 year old son who’s forming his first band. He’s been a fan since he was little and this re-enforced all that he loves about them. If you are looking for a gritty expose, look elsewhere. If you want to celebrate one of those rare meetings of minds that results in a singular moment in rock and roll history, and share in their joy of the process, look no further.

Comprised completely of interviews - including never-before heard interviews from John Bonham - and interspersed with early recording sessions and concert footage from their first two albums, this documentary is an absolute treat.

Music was amazing, hearing the story directly from Plant, Page, and John Paul Jones made it an authentic retelling of their story!!

Led Zep fans will love it

Loved the documentary. Came into their music later in life, I knew a some but not a great deal about the early years of Led Zeppelin. Great to see the archival material and the individual band members recalling their stories, the big standout though was the sheer power and electricity of their music which truly comes across. I saw the film in a local arts theatre and it’s the first time in a very long time when watching a film spontaneous applause broke out amongst the audience first after watching their first performance in Denmark and later a concert in the US. Recommended viewing.

In tears at the end. Bonzo the legend, the drummer, He was just something else. Love you John! Love the respect that came across for the man, the legend. If you hadn't guessed I'm a drummer. Jimmy the wizard, and just all of Led Zeppelin. Love them, so happy they did what they did.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Sadly didn't know they used to be the Yardbirds!

Getting to know the individuals that were only celebrity images since my high school days. Fantastic old interview clips and performances that were high quality. Thoroughly enjoyed this film. The IMAX experience was incredible both large screen image and the sound system. Great production.

I'm really sorry, but the story is missing. Dazed & Confused 3x is not enough. It would be a start, but then the movie is over.

Great movie but it left a few more eventful years to cover. Maybe Part 2 possible?

Interesting Story. Would like to have seen more interviews with others outside of Zep.

Commentary from band members was great. You could see their joy looking back upon what they accomplished. The film footage, sound and editing was superb.

Loved the movie and mix between documentary and concert footage. I'm always amazed at how much early footage of bands, from before they made it, is available to include in these types of movies. Would have liked to see a little more back story on how Page/Jones hooked up with Plant/Bonham. Seemed like that part of the story got short changed a bit.

To follow the band for the first year was amazing with the flashback pictures, photos and other releases. Only problem was the loudness of the film.

Great movie. The sound was amazing. Just wish it covered their whole career. But it was great to see the history of the band in their early days.
