Beyond Borders Reviews

Important issues buried in soap opera silliness.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 14, 2010

| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 30, 2006

A silly movie made all the more silly by how much it wants not to be a silly movie.

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Oct 30, 2003

It all becomes little more than feel-good-about- feeling-bad window dressing, like an issue of Utne Reader in Dolby Surround Sound.

| Oct 28, 2003

By the time the closing credits come up, you're left with the unshakable feeling that things might have been a tad better off if all involved had scrapped this terrible film and instead donated the multimillion-dollar budget to charity.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Oct 27, 2003

... an old-fashioned romance.

Full Review | Oct 27, 2003

A melodrama with pretensions to humanitarian generosity.

Full Review | Oct 26, 2003

Well-intentioned but astonishingly flat.

The premise of the movie deserves better.

A far-fetched romantic adventure.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Oct 24, 2003

To imagine that there are those who would scoff at the idea that fashion cares! As Beyond Borders demonstrates with such lavish sensitivity, fashion cares like nothing else. When it comes to giving up food, fashion practically spews concern.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Oct 24, 2003

It's an inspiring story. I just wish a better movie accompanied it.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Oct 24, 2003

Beyond Borders is a film with its heart in the right place. Unfortunately, its head is stuck so far in the clouds that it dissolves into preachy do-gooder mush.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Oct 24, 2003

Skip Beyond Borders and write a check to the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders.

Beyond Borders should have been called Beyond Boredom.

Full Review | Original Score: 1/5 | Oct 24, 2003

Beyond Borders makes an earnest stab at illustrating the hardships and sacrifices humanitarian workers contend with -- but in the end, all the suffering merely forms an amorphous backdrop for a Harlequin romance.

Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 24, 2003

Despite their blatant use of humanitarianism for marketing purposes, it's obvious the filmmakers' hearts are in the right place, but the sort of consciousness raising the movie tries to do only works if it's enveloped in a compelling story.

Worth watching despite the miscues.

At its worst, Beyond Borders could be accused of exploiting the very cause it wants to champion; at its best, it only makes us wish someone had abandoned this campaign as a lost cause, and started all over again.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Oct 24, 2003

Beyond Borders invites ruminations about style over substance.
