Big Gold Brick Reviews

Big Gold Brick could’ve been trimmed down a bit with a runtime of two hours and twelve minutes, and some of the characters, like Lucy, are not fully fleshed out. But overall, I enjoyed Petsos’ strange vision.

| Original Score: 7.5/10 | Apr 7, 2022

If you can get on the exact same wavelength as 'Big Gold Brick', then there's plenty to enjoy about writer and director Brian Petsos' distinctly unique and wholly original debut feature.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 28, 2022

Promoted as a cerebral comedy, but comes off as dumb.

| Original Score: C- | Mar 24, 2022

Dear Reader, the emperor has no clothes and BIG GOLD BRICK does not make good on its promise of an intellectual escape.

| Original Score: 3/10 | Mar 16, 2022

Writer-director Brian Petsos' Big Gold Brick promises something idiosyncratic and darkly whimsical, but the execution betrays this vision completely.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Mar 15, 2022

As for the film, it is an awful mess. Not even really sure what the point or story was here.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Mar 10, 2022

After over two hours of these characters running around to no great purpose, its still not clear what the point of Big Gold Brick is. It doesnt work as a comedy, its fantasy elements are jarring and make no sense, and the plot is all over the place.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Mar 4, 2022

Its not for lack of trying or lack of vision, but iBig Gold Brick/i fails to generate much steam either as a personality profile or a heightened, disturbing comedy.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Mar 3, 2022

Instantly in the running for one of the worst movies of 2022, Big Gold Brick does its best to squander it's several well-known actors, and succeeds.

| Original Score: D | Mar 2, 2022

Writer-director Brian Petsos gets one thing right in this preposterous waste of time: You need to have a concussion to understand it.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Mar 1, 2022

It creates curiosity through its experimentation with tone and head-trippy visuals, resulting in an expectation of a surprising viewing experience. But confusingly, while having a lot going on, it has nothing going on at the same time.

Big Gold Brick”may be a film absent even the faintest trace of purpose or momentum -- its endless parade of energy-less moments connected only by the lack of life shared between them.

| Original Score: D | Feb 28, 2022

Big Gold Brick may be a bit too enamored with its own quirkiness, but everything Garcia does, no matter how outlandish, feels perfectly natural.

| Feb 28, 2022

Even for those on the same absurdist wavelength, the film is too rambling and disjointed to make a more profound impact.

| Feb 26, 2022

Unlike many other film enthusiasts turned filmmakers, Petsos hasnt figured out anything useful to do with his influences.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Feb 25, 2022

Between the uninteresting characters, the complete waste of the talented actors on hand and the complete absence of anything remotely resembling a point, Big Gold Brick is a film that is both mystifying and terrible in equally painful measure.

| Feb 25, 2022

If Petsos intends his film as a commentary on specific film indulgences, parody and sincerity are indistinguishable.

| Feb 25, 2022

With the movie's bloated narrative and straight-faced tone, the filmmaker appears to have bought into the very target of his own gag.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Feb 25, 2022

Despite piling on character details and plot developments, “Big Gold Brick” is beset by torpor, in large part because every new incident is untethered to the ones that preceded and follow it.

| Feb 25, 2022

Apparently intended as a wackily oddball riff on baseless celebrity and florid con-artistry, but the title turns out to accurately reflect its quality, despite some impressive names in the cast.
