Black and White Reviews

Full Review | Original Score: 2/4 | Oct 18, 2008

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 18, 2008

As lively and amusing as the film is in some ways, it does set up expectations at the outset that are never really delivered upon.

It looks like a mess -- if one stuffed with incident, issues and intrigue.

| Jun 24, 2006

While Toback certainly makes a game effort to study the infiltration of hip-hop into the mainstream, his inability to choose what ground to cover ultimately results in an episodic hotch-potch.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 13, 2004

It doesn't try to spell out all aspects of the issue or arrive at any particular point. Toback presents specific characters dealing with specific problems and, through their stories, somehow manages to take the temperature of the times.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jun 18, 2002

| Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 19, 2002

This lively mess proves that when Toback loses his head, he does it with style.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | May 10, 2001

A study in multiculturalism, Toback's film is something of a melting-pot itself: mixed-up, messy and teeming with vitality.

At heart a clich-strewn melodrama about a bunch of white, upper-class Manhattan kids who aspire to ghetto culture.

Don't let the title fool you - nothing about this movie is as simple as black and white.

| Jan 1, 2000

Tends to be blabby and pedantic.

Full Review | Jan 1, 2000

Although the mixture sometime turns a murky hue, Toback's palette is stark and unburnished.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 1, 2000

Toback's method of presenting the evidence without judgment backfires, finally appearing just as shapeless as the movie's structure.

| Jan 1, 2000

Maverick moviemaker James Toback (Two Girls and a Guy) has latched on to the most fascinating cultural phenomenon of the American moment.

| Jan 1, 2000

Like James Toback himself, his new film is in your face, overflowing with ideas, outrageous in its connections, maddening, illogical and fascinating.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 1, 2000

If Black and White seems facile and inconclusive wading in this end of the pool, it's downright retarded as it skates on the patina of black male virility and racism.

| Jan 1, 2000

Black and White is defeated by its structural shapelessness, and a down-with-it attitude that glosses over the script's lack of any real analysis of hip-hop's cultural influence.

Full Review | Jan 1, 2000

Black and White fails because the movie has no shades of gray to it.

A hard-driven, fascinating affair.
