BlackBerry Reviews

Mar 23, 2025

Awesome to see BlackBerry get some recognition as the grandfather of smartphones, this movie shows the rise & fall of BlackBerry, might not sound too interesting but I enjoyed this more than The Social Network or Jobs. I did a fact check after the movie & most of what they showed was accurate besides the exaggeration of some people's personalities which is common when real things make it to the big screen for entertainment. Overall, an accurate & neat movie about real people & incidents.

This is an incredible movie, showing the journey of the once "on top of the world" smartphone, Blackberry. It shows the struggle of a smaller tech company in Canada trying to compete with the big companies in the United States such as Apple. There's a great mix of dramatic scenes as well as some well placed comedy. The acting is incredible, especially Glenn Howerton who plays Jim Balsillie, the business man who was fired from his previous job and becomes the co-CEO of Research in Motion or RIM (which eventually developed the BlackBerry) and becomes the handler of the business side of the company. Jay Baruchel is also excellent in this flick, playing Mike Lazaridis, the other CEO of RIM, being more the "brains" behind the technology. Aside from the acting, the cinematography was captivating, with clever techniques such as filming conversations shot through the outer windows and sudden zooms when capturing emotion. It makes you wonder what could've been if the technology of the BlackBerry was handled differently.

Fairly gritty, very good acting, fun to watch, solid 3.8/4

What makes this product bio-pic unique, (It is strange that we live in that "product bio-pic" is a genre) is the fact that this is a product that follows the story arc of a rockstar. It has both a rise to stardom and a fall from grace. With products like "Air", "Tetris" and "Flaming Hot Cheetos" the product goes up and doesn't ever really fade away to obscurity. The fact that this product has such a specific niche of popularity, the film makers are able to be more self-deprecating than the other products. The movie is full of some very funny people, and it has some good jokes throughout. What keeps this film from being a great comedy is the fact that the characters are not very likable. You end up rooting for their failure. The film is good enough.

A tight little rise and fall story of the tech we've already forgotten.

A very engaging hidden gem of a biopic movie set in rather recent history. The movie does a terrific job luring you in with some hilarious relatable dorky office comedy hijinks, then exciting you with their ingenious technological brainstorming that revolutionizes the cellphone industry, only to succumb to the weight of their own hubris and ineptitude as the tension and drama unfolds throughout the second half of the movie. The acting all across the board is amazing and the characters really hit that strive between brilliant, moronic, belligerent, and emotionally captivating. It’s like watching The Wolf of Wallstreet being run by Ed, Edd, n’ Eddy. You really feel the betrayal and crumbling of the co-founders’ friendship as the film goes on and Mike buys more and more into Jim’s soulless and spineless business mindset due to his own selfish spineless indecision and shifting priorities, all while Jim’s short temper and short-sighted greed flourishes. Through all of this, Doug is the only one to consistently maintain his integrity and genuine moral support of his coworkers and friends before business. And even though he loses a close friend and leaves the company, in the end, he makes it out on top and maintains what he’s always loved in the first place: geeking around with his closest friends. It’s a fascinating look into the revolutionary early days of the smart phone and the sad fates of those who break new ground eventually getting overshadowed by others who perfect what they started. ProZD’s cameo role was a nice cherry on top to this wonderful sundae surprise. The historical inaccuracies of the characters’ personalities can be a flaw, but the movie has such an absurdist take with them that it almost mitigates it for the fun wild ride it wants to have with this premise. It’s a terrific biopic dramedy and easily one of my favorite films of the year.

This movie is very much like 'Goodfellas.' Howerton is the Pesci of the film. 😂

Ill-fated pioneer, by evident competitive evolution, feeds curiosity over the technological business beginnings marked by a potentially sharp showcase with intelligent enthusiasm through the factual proceedings routinely crafted. The screenplay unveils the conceptual degree that captures the surrounding fascination through basis characterization and unethical focus with passionate conviction to the factual though complicated deliverance per usual intellectual brewing honing the talented calibers that surprises. Blackberry is exactly what the “biopic” of a company should be. The plot doesn’t get bogged down in personal matters and remains focused on the meteoric rise and tremendous collapse of the smartphone company that served as the intermediary between the “dumb phone” generation and where we are today. Directorially, it’s shot like we’re in there with the tech engineers who more resemble D&D-playing gamers than the stereotypical “tech bro” of the last 15 years — luckily, the camerawork only gives us the appearance of being in the dingy, jubilant workspace. Someone send deodorant. But from these modest beginnings, Mike (Jay Baruchel) and Doug (Matt Johnson, who is also the director) sign a pact with the devil (Glenn Howerton) to kick Research in Motion (RIM) into high gear. Jim (Howerton), while not a literal demon (although admits to being a vampire during an outburst in front of the NHL, one of the best scenes of the movie), is everything that RIM is not. He’s a staid, Harvard-educated, corporate sociopath prone to fits of outbursts. With him, they build an unforeseen and evanescent empire. It’s a surprisingly funny movie — I adore the phones stuck to the head with a headband in a Bluetooth earpiece precursor — and shows fictionalized boardroom meetings that are impactful and move the story along. The lessons are timeless — don’t sell out (unless you want to be really rich, then definitely sell out), don’t ditch your friends, don’t move production overseas, and stay humble, even if that means refraining from bragging about your plans to move an NHL team from Pittsburgh to Hamilton, ON to shove it in the face of a corporate raider. Blackberry has not received nearly enough love. It’s full of ridiculous hairpieces and Glenn Howerton facial expressions that will have you pointing at the screen and yelling “Dennis!” It feels like the cool, dramedy, stepbrother to The Social Network. Definitely watch it.

I liked this movie. I found it interesting. Definitely worth a watch

Worth watching if nothing else is on, but it is way over-simplistic of how business works. The movies makes it seem like some guys just goof all day but then also create the most dominant phone on the market. The guy playing the CEO was good, and Matt Johnson was funny in his role.

*BlackBerry* was a pretty fun watch, especially as a fan of Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton. Their chemistry is awesome, with Baruchel’s quieter, nervous character balancing out Howerton’s intense and almost aggressive personality—seeing them clash was a highlight! The movie does a great job with the cultural references, really taking you back to the early tech days, which adds a lot to the comedy and makes it feel real. I was actually surprised it didn’t get more recognition, maybe even an Oscar nod, because the casting is spot-on, and it’s more than just a comedy—it’s also a cool look into the story behind the first smartphone. That said, the pacing felt off in places, which kept it from being amazing. I’m glad I finally saw it, but I did expect a bit more. Solid movie, just shy of great.

Stereotypical characters. Lame, predictable script. Over the top in every possible way. Compelling actual story absolutely ruined by all involved.

Loses steam a bit but still a funny and entertaining ride.

What could of been a dry, dour movie on the fall of what was a promising and enterprising company, is turned into a cinematic delight with it's healthy doses of humour and compassion gained through great writing and clever direction. One of 2023's standout movies.

3.8. Dramatic, tense, funny, so much screaming, somehow made me feel emotional. Found the character portrayals very convincing and the way it was filmed kind of reminded of the office / a documentary / mockumentary which was fun. What was up with Mike’s hair though…😋 “What’s a network limit load” “Good enough is the enemy of humanity”

An informative piece of nostalgia that everyone using the internet or a mobile device should see. Set less than thirty years ago, a lot of young people would be surprised at where from the devices they built their lives around came. Informative and mildly entertaining, but not memorable.
