Boogie Reviews
Pure garbage. Can’t believe this was allowed to hit theaters.
Need more movies that are crossing over, into two or more different perspectives. Loved loved loved it, Haters gonna hate. It's a good movie, we need more love for those who are in a struggle to change the way people see things, I'm all in.
Contrived, and boring as a result. Huang has loaded the story with too many elements, and not delivered enough of them with the plausibility and expertise needed to make this anything other than mediocre viewing
critics aren't giving movie BOOGIE. feat pop smoke enough promot to make scene need more. Kesiena emegbo.
good basketball movie
Reasonably well done and entertaining, but sports-centric stories are all that interesting too me.
Chinese and messy "He Got Game"
2 out of 5 stars. Dull script and story. Makes this coming of age story forgettable. Acting is stale. Direction is uneven. It was difficult sitting through this one.
It kept my attention and I always like a sports movie but the lead character just wasn't likeable. He was an jerk for almost the entire movie and there was no build up to any of that changing.
Pop was here last week He was talkin' about Brooklyn and the place Brooklyn was at How they were really like, thriving right now Or he was, you know He was tryna, pull people up with him And he wasn't even to where he was 'bout to be He just was trying to, he was trying to get there I mean, he was on his, he was well on his way Um, it's just tragic Twenty years old, rest in peace God bless Pop Smoke
Movie was confusing it had its moments but overall wasn’t that great.
This movie was awful.
If you like typical propaganda about how great the Asian and Black culture get along and that it is the red state whites who are holding the yellow man down, then this flick is for you. But reality is reality, and the truth is the truth. Poorly written script. Not reflective of an Asian man's struggles with basketball or life. No way an Asian player gets top billing at any school not in Chinatown; that's the reality with sports and Asian male bias. Just ask Jeremy Lin. (Of note, the lack of respect by the director to pan Jeremy Lin's struggles and glass ceiling in his script is wrong. The man is like Jackie Robinson, yet he is marginalized with Boogie saying "F J Lin"? Please. J Lin would straight up school Boogie and Monk.) The director obviously has trouble telling truth from fiction. Racism is inherent in all cultures, and the way Blacks see Asians playing basketball is 2x worse than whites (if not more). Likewise, a truthful movie would have Boogie deal with his black girlfriend and his parents' issue with it. That's all washed over. Want to watch Asian struggles and bias that continue today, but shine the light on Asian culture and strength, watch Warriors (television show based on Bruce Lee inspired writings of 1800's America). It's fictional, but in the end, the Asian is a hero and the male is no pushover. Just watch The Karate Kid (original) and insert an Asian character into Danny's role. That would provide better fact about dealing with discriminatory classmates, interracial relationships, and becoming a champion. This flick gets 1 star for the great job that the actors and actresses did with the weak script (otherwise 1/2 star). RIP Pop Smoke; the camera liked him a lot; so sad.
For a movie that boasts of cultural struggle, there seems to be a huge lack of it. The movie had so much potential to be a game changer for representation of the Asian American community. But instead of focusing on the elements that show the struggle of Chinese stereotypes, it keeps all the attention on the main character’s personal issues. The acting is pretty great but it’s not strong enough to make up for such a weak plot.
Good movie and interesting to watch. My disappointment was the swearing using the “F-bomb.”
Good acting and casting, story was fairly simple and hard to believe.
I wanted to love this movie. But ended up confused by the story line as it branched into so many directions without any foundational thread.
The plot was good and the storyline was good. I enjoyed this movie I just thought the ending would have been more detailed.
