Boy Erased Reviews
It provides some interesting moments of drama and some insightful observations. But it feels emotionally lacking when all is said and done.

Boy Erased scans as, and turns out to be precisely, textbook Oscar-bait: it’s topical, its heart is in the right place, the cast is stacked, and despite all good intentions the final effect is very meh (“powerful” is a word I expect to see used a lot).

A deft touch is brought to a delicate subject matter that downplays rather than heightens, even as harrowing as scenes can be.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 17, 2022
Boy Erased, though predictably made, tells a harrowing story with great empathy for Jared and his family.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 4, 2022
This is a tightly wound drama that packs an emotional punch. As movies about institutionalised abuse, this is up there with One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

It tries hard, feels hard, and it cast itself a swell group of actors to make you care about characters whose motions you can see coming from a mile ahead

Boy Erased is, sadly, of-the-moment.

We get it, they're meant to be repressed. But if you can't tell, then show us instead. Unfortunately, director Joel Edgerton's patchy script frequently fails to do either.
| Original Score: 3/5 | May 13, 2021
The movie doesn't do anything flashy or innovative, but it tells a necessary story from a very human perspective.

The true power of Boy Erased is its ability to remind audiences of what LGBT+ youth struggle with as it is based on Garrard Conley's life.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Jan 30, 2021
Powerful and personal, but hopefully one for parents to see and talk about with their kids who may be struggling for acceptance.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 5, 2020
Boy Erased goes out of its way to be a movie that can speak without condescension or blame to both secular and Christian audiences-if the latter give it a chance.

Although our main protagonist is sadly underdeveloped, allowing Boy Erased to practically live up to its title, it is still an adequately made effort.

A stunning, beautifully crafted, and impossible to erase film.
| Original Score: 3.5/4.0 | Sep 4, 2020
There is an overwrought, stacking-the-deck quality to the film's enmity.

As a showcase for unforgettable screen performances, Boy Erased is indelible.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 27, 2020
This isn't a movie so much as it is a machine that uses others' issues, cuts down their humanity, and hopes to churn out Oscar nominations.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 25, 2020
Joel Edgerton delivers a wake-up call to those blinded by their faith with a gentle gut-punch.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 13, 2020
...in the end it feels too lofty and self-important and the stakes never feel high enough. There are two major reasons to see "Boy Erased": Lucas Hedges and Nicole Kidman.
