Boy Erased Reviews
Boy Erased is careful to humanise Jared's parents as loving, but wrongheaded. If anything, it's too respectful of their damaging views.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 14, 2019
I applaud the message of the film.

The film feels thin, drab and ultimately unable to harness the collective power of its otherwise talented cast.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 10, 2019
The whole endeavour sits meekly in the shadow of last year's brilliant conversion-camp drama The Miseducation of Cameron Post.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 8, 2019
Boy Erased could have been more sharply etched, all told - there's something naggingly indistinct about it. But the lessons of Conley's experience fight manfully, all the same, to punch through and be counted.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 7, 2019
Worthy theme and willing creators. But for whatever reason, Boy Erased never rubs its story potential the right way.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 6, 2019
An open, generous performance from Lucas Hedges carries this earnestly intended movie from writer-director Joel Edgerton.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 6, 2019
It has some strong elements, most notably Hedges' deeply layered and very subtle portrayal of the tormented Jared... It is a pity, though, that Boy Erased doesn't take us anywhere we haven't been before.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 6, 2019
Joel Edgerton once again proves himself a gifted filmmaker - but for all the craft, compelling performances and good intentions at work here, the drama itself falls somewhat short.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 4, 2019
Edgerton deftly balances Nancy's angst with Jared's ordeal at being subjected to a narrow-minded blame-game therapy.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 16, 2018
I think Boy Erased is an important film for an Indian audience. I don't know if we have equivalents of conversion therapy here but I do know that there is enough prejudice, misinformation and hate. I urge you to see this film.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Nov 16, 2018
The film's episodic nature and overtly melodramatic tendencies are its undoing...
| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 13, 2018
Joel Edgerton has made an effective movie and a significant story with wonderfully rich performances - casting Kidman will automatically give you that.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 10, 2018
"Boy Erased" has its heart in the right place in exposing these supposed treatment centers. But where it should light a fire, it barely musters any smoke.

If you know someone who is thinking of putting their kid though one of these programs, buy them a ticket. If not, what's the point?
| Original Score: 0/5 | Nov 9, 2018
It's a slow build to a Lord of the Flies scenario and a predictably tragic climax with a touch of gothic horror but everything else about the film is imbued with such restraint that it's all too believable.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 9, 2018
To its great credit, "Boy Erased" never reduces Jared's parents to monolithic, backwards-thinking caricatures.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Nov 9, 2018
Edgerton proves an incisive filmmaker. Every beat has weight. Every close-up registers. He values silence - he trusts you to feel things along with his characters.
| Nov 9, 2018
Edgerton is a fine director and actor, but his adaptive writing is bland.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 9, 2018
The film boasts a range of great performances by fine actors, including the up-and-coming and soon to be ubiquitous Lucas Hedges. It also offers a screenplay penned by Edgerton that treats the subject and its opposing views with care and consideration.
