Bridget Jones's Diary Reviews
Not an awful movie, but not a great movie. Just baby-soft pabulum ground down to a soft consistency and fed through a teat to the audience; plot is non-propulsive, story is entertaining but flaccid, and I suppose it's watchable for an airplane flight home from Brussels to the US but you learn absolutely nothing. The 'twists' are somewhat predictable, the diary conceit is silly, but while it's bad, it's bad in a good way. I did like Hugh Grant, Renee Zellweger wasn't half-bad but was, frankly, a tad over the top, and the Colin Firth character wasn't greatly believable. If you're going to contrast Firth with Grant at least give us an explanation for why Zellweger's character should be attracted to two very different types. None's presented.
Though Bridget Jones's Diary is far from lacking in flaws, it still remains to be a cute and often quite amusing film that I couldn't help but enjoy.
It has the classic charm and good humor of 2000s romantic comedies, which are missing in today's either too silly or too realistic films. The beginning is the hardest part and can be the Achilles heel for people to decide whether to continue or give up altogether. Bridget and Daniel's relationship is very poorly developed, it seems so meaningless that it bothers you that everything is just happening in her head. Darcy's totally unusual interest in Bridget is also unconvincing and the script does little to explore the motivations: did it come from childhood or was it because he was interested in funny women? The supporting characters are not very charismatic: Bridget's parents are completely dispensable and contribute little to the story, the women who surround Daniel and Darcy when they don't appear out of nowhere, disappear out of nowhere. It's a little entertaining, but I found the development of the entire story and the relationships weak, superficial and unrealistic most of the time, which prevented me from getting more attached to the plots that were proposed.
So funny and sweet. Renee gives a stellar performance. Love the triangle With her, grant and firth. Tim Treakle
It’s a woman’s film. The jokes are seen a mile off. That said, it’s an interesting view on grief and aging. The womaniser played by Hugh Grant is revealed as a lonely older man who now see merit in babysitting Brigit’s two children. Brigit herself finds love in the end but it would have been more interesting for her to find meaning in the single life.
This was a really cute romcom. Bridget’s character is really fun and I love the fight scene near the end, it’s so funny.
My Christmas go to movie every year. Love her.
Zellgewer is great at interpreting comedy and the most clear proof is this movie. I think it changed my view on what I wanted to experience while watching movies. I never laughed that much watching a film. Bridget, I love you.
Genuinely one of the most boring, slow and long romantic comedies I’ve seen in a while. The plot just drags on and on, never seems to get anywhere.
Good laughs, Miss Zellweger carry on the entire movie as supposed to.
BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY may be rooted in its era, risking a touch of datedness, but Zellweger’s earnest performance lends it lasting appeal.
'Bridget Jones’s Diary' delivers enough, it is fairly amusing and moves along well across around 90 minutes. Renée Zellweger plays a Brit impressively, something that feels quite rare to say about an American actor. She is excellent throughout, particularly for the comedy. I will say that I didn't really sense any proper onscreen chemistry with her and the eventual bloke she lands with (won't spoiler whom), Zellweger had more with the other dude to be honest. Hugh Grant and Colin Firth are in this in those respective roles, no surprise to say they are both good. About time I got this watched, being from its country of origin and all that. I had heard of it for as long as I can remember, it's a popular film evidently. Despite that, the only things I knew coming into this were the lead cast and, eh, the main character's preferred choice of underwear... ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Oh, and I was also aware of Gabrielle's banger "Out of Reach", which I knew originated from this movie. I didn't, though, know "It's Raining Men" by Geri Halliwell (another tune, don't @ me) also gained popularity due to this. How about that.
I watched it because I loved the movie Pride and Prejudice and wanted to see how they changed the story. I thought Bridget was too troubled and insecure and did not fit the character as a modern independent woman who Darcy can admire and fall in love with. I have no idea why he likes her! except that she’s quirky. I also thought that Darcy seemed very bland and boring compared to the character played by Hugh Grant. Hugh Grants character was very interesting - wish they would make a movie from his point of view.
These movies are wonderful, on life of a single woman 👠 making herself happy, taking life by the b____and make it worth living .The Character Mark is very prudish, but yet undeniably hot and is easy to look at though all these movies and Daniel is such a Playboy and he always seems to intice every woman he meets including Bridget , I think it was the Poetry, My favorite scene is in the lake when Bridget and Daniel recite Keats Poetry and Daniel decides to enter her canoe and Mark is laughing with Jealousy and another scene in the movies is when Mark realizes that Bridget really thinks Mark is a Prude when he reads the Diary and decides he still loves Bridget even after what she said in the Diary. I have many more scenes that I could watch over and over in all the movies, looking forward to new book and movie Feb 14 can not come soon enough.
I watched this movie when it was first released in the theatre and not again until just today, and I kind of regret not revisiting it sooner. It’s quite funny and cute. Now that I’m older I understand the parallels between this movie and Pride and Prejudice. It definitely helps that Colin Firth is both Mr. Darcy and Mark Darcy. Some things didn’t age well. Bridget’s boss flirting with her would be a major HR issue now. And her weight would not be seen as anything wrong. She was only 131 lbs at one point. That’s not overweight at all. 2001 was wild for thinking that was overweight. But the movie was cute, it had some tender moments, and it was thoroughly enjoyable.
Rom-com aside, an all-around classic and one of my favorites. I can watch this a hundred times on the couch any time I'm up for a light-hearted movie, and put aside my troubles for a night. And, this is honestly one of the few films that make me laugh out loud. Sure, there are some annoying spinster jokes, but aside from that I think anyone with a somewhat dry sense of humor will enjoy this. Just wish I could find more films like it today.
Yeah...everyone's favourite if you are a yank.
Renée Zellweger is cute but why a Texan to play a Brit. Were there no actual real life British women to play the part? Not as good or subtle as the book.
Genuinely one of the most boring, slow and long romantic comedies I’ve seen in a while. The plot just drags on and on, never seems to get anywhere. Got so boring it made me annoyed. Please pick something else to watch.
It's the best romcom of all time, and that's all there is to it.
