Candy Reviews

Davies has no new insights into the heroin spiral, but this silly melodrama benefits from the palpable chemistry between Ledger and Cornish

| Original Score: C | May 15, 2009

Without real characters or a fresh take on drug addiction, Candy has little to recommend it for anyone who's seen The Basketball Diaries or Requiem for a Dream.

Undeniably affecting.

There's no moment that truly feels original until Candy's climactic breakdown at the end of the movie. By then, it's too late.

Those with the stomach for searing drama will recognise superior writing, direction and acting in one of the most heartbreaking films of the year.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Dec 30, 2006

For all its depiction of a descent into drug addiction, Candy is filled with surprisingly sweet moments and goes down more easily than seems possible given the subject matter.

Just because you're a poet and in love and jamming spikes in your veins in the deepest downest underer, it doesn't make you Nick Cave.

There's a formula here, and it's not the liquid being shot into popping veins.

...Because we never had a strong handle on who all these people were at the beginning, it's difficult to care about whether they're capable of redemption in the end.

Unfortunately too many elements of this Australian feature have been recycled from other addiction stories...

It's one thing for a movie to show us the perils of addiction. It's another for it to give us two people who can't seem to find any joy in it.

... for a druggie movie, "Candy" is surprisingly dynamic and involving ...

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Nov 30, 2006

As good as the main performances are, they're inevitably flatter than the language of the film's narrator.

... a flawed but engrossing parable on love and sacrifice.

Rehab comes not a moment too soon.

| Original Score: C | Nov 30, 2006

[Heath Ledger] is alive and awake and interesting every minute of Candy.

Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/4 | Nov 30, 2006

I think it's a very strong effort.

... doesn't add anything substantively new to [the story of heroin addiction], though it has been nicely directed by Neil Armfield ...

Full Review | Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 17, 2006

In the end, Candy is a little too sweet and not quite harmful enough to the audience's health.

| Nov 17, 2006

Though it's a well-worn story, Candy does touch on a universal anxiety. For two people basking in the heat of an all-consuming love, what happens when the power gets cut off?
