Churchill Reviews

Churchill creates, as did the man himself in his lifetime, the illusion of stability, even at the height of crisis. This alone is worth the price of admission.

But as noble as the intentions of this minor biopic may be, it struggles to overcome a strange goofiness that all too frequently peaks out from behind the drama.

Cox is well suited to playing this character (Churchill ) and though he is not the first, nor maybe the best, he does well to portray the iconic and beloved man.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 6, 2019

They have failed miserably, squandering Cox's committed performance in the process.

| Jul 9, 2019

It is an admirable aim but unfortunately the film falls far short of its goal.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 30, 2019

The reason to see it is Brian Cox, who gained a substantial amount of weight and leans full bore into the role. Cox roars and blusters.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Apr 17, 2019

These movies tend to have a tenuous basis in fact.

Watch for Brian Cox's extraordinary and powerful portrayal of Winston. Arrogant and egotistical, he arouses both exasperation and sympathy - something that could also be said for the film itself.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 25, 2019

Unflinching in its portrayal, Churchill opts for drama ahead of accuracy but still provides interest and offers an altered insight into the legendary leader.

| Original Score: 7.5/10 | Dec 21, 2018

A fascinating look at a compressed but crucial few days in Britain's history. It's a painstakingly directed and well-acted historical biopic.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 24, 2018

This approach has the capacity to make its subject appear a repellant and even pathetic figure, but for avoiding that fate we can largely thank Cox for a magisterial and empathetic performance that gets under the leader's skin.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Dec 27, 2017

Inserts as protagonist a man who resembles Prime Minister Winston Churchill in almost no ways whatsoever.

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Dec 26, 2017

I'll leave it to real historians to separate fact from fiction, but for all its provocations -- and von Tunzelmann admits she has manipulated some events -- this is certainly a film that gets you thinking.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 9, 2017

The story itself is desperately repetitive and ungrateful, and to overcome it we invented cinema. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 22, 2017

Sadly, "underwhelming" is the only word to describe the movie...

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 19, 2017

It offers a lot for an actor willing the seize the bit and gnaw on it, as Cox is more than capable of.

| Sep 8, 2017

We're entertained and kept interested in one of the biggest and most important events in modern history.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 5, 2017

Ambitious and veined with noble wood, but boring and disappointing. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 4, 2017

As it stands, director Jonathan Teplitzky has made a minor entry into the cinematic literature of the war. It's a bit like having only one chapter of what should have been a multi-volume endeavor.

Churchill is not just history but also a work of art.
