Churchill Reviews

What a completely inaccurate portrayal of Churchill and the events leading up to D-Day. I knew this was a stinker when I saw a 50 star flag in the opening scenes. I can’t finish watching it because of all the inaccuracies

Incompetently written and provides no insight into its fascinating focus.

I found this quite a moving film. Its mostly dialogue based - there's not much in terms of action type scenes shown, i.e. battle fields, although Churchill is seen near the start surveying the aftermath of a battle. It did well in terms of making me imagine being in the shoes of man, imagining how undermined he must have felt when other officials downplayed his ideas, didn't allow things to happen and so on. I also thought the music chosen was quite good, it felt quite fitting and it is quite a thoughtful and sometimes tense film, in terms of the frustration Churchill felt towards other peoples views and thoughts on his plans and suggestions, even his closest colleagues. I can't say I knew a great deal about the person, other than the obvious basics, though I could understand why he was prone to depression, given his frustration at being perceived to be somewhat 'past it', to put it one way. This an intriguing and fairly poignant watch, with decent enough performances, so I'd recommend it on that basis.

I thought it was an interesting look at Churchill and how he handled the balance of both prime minister and minister of defence for England leading up the events of the D-day invasion that helped win WWII

Great acting, but I'm a WWII history buff and this was historically bollocks. There's no way Churchill made all this fuss to try and stop D-Day as portrayed here. It's an insult to the man and to historical accuracy. Couldn't even watch the whole thing.

What a turgid affair that does very little to increasing Churchill literacy. Just watch ‘Darkest Hour' which is more compelling in every aspect.

Brian Cox is a great actor but the complete absence of the true historical facts of how Churchill felt about D-Day; the relationships he had with Clemmie, his Chiefs of Staff and the Americans make the whole thing a tissue of lies. It's about as accurate as Churchill: The Hollywood Years with none of the humour.

Hated it. Classic example of rewriting history. Hit piece on the greatest leader of modern history.

This is an excellent movie. Not sure why the critics and others don't agree. You will watch the entire movie. When it was released there were other movies that kept people away from this one (I think a Star Wars movie was released at the same time.) I would watch this a second time. It is about history and based on a true story.

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. -Horrible writing -Horrible and awkward Diologue -Horrible Drama and Tension -Horrible Set design -Horrible historical accuracy -Horrible characters ... The only good thing about this movie are some of the actors (especially Brain Cox) and the music. But due to the bad diologue its mostly wasted. I would never watch this movie again, there is many better Movies portraying this time period

Some uncreative fools say it isn't accurate. Who cares, in fact how many movies are? It was absolutely fabulous!

A disgraceful "homage" to Britain's wartime leader! Factually woeful and unintentionally laughable, especially the scene where Eisenhower and Churchill disagree over the D-Day invasionand Ike tells Winnie "There's a war on". Watch it at your peril!

Brian Cox wasted in such a poor film. I was unable to watch all of the production as it was horribly wrong on so many levels. Historical accuracy went out the door first, Churchill would have been involved during the D-Day planning. Script - woeful for most of the main characters. Budget, not exactly overflowing with background actors. Location - so presenting the most important plan of the war in a garden - why? A hopeless and unpleasant film that should be avoided

I'm disappointed with some of the low reviews. They either want a strict interpretation of history or a glorified hero worship piece. This was neither. As an amateur historian I know a fair bit about Churchill. He was prone to emotional outbursts, bouts of depression, and various other oddities associated with manic genius. After his experiences with war I could easily imagine him wanting to change the plan for Overlord. I could also easily imagine him reliving the disaster of Galipoli over and over, and his fear that the Normandy invasion would end in another such disaster. The potential was there. If you know enough history you'll recall that D-Day was half skill of the fighting force that won the day, and half pure luck that Hitler was and idiot strategist. So those saying that this film is 'made up' need to take some time and re-learn who Winston Churchill was. A flawed man who struggled to lead yet succeeded in doing so. I really liked this film. Brian Cox was fantastic and portrayed that flawed great man very well.

I think this is a great story based on a great man. Entertaining and passionate. This film hits all the right notes.

Never in the field of movie-making have so few needed to apologise for so much to so many.

Poor history facts and poor execution, No one that knows anything about Churchill will believe the script. A shame because Mr. Cox interpretation was great.

75% fiction. I stopped halfway through.
