Clown Reviews
Despite dealing with a demon, the film is very grounded. [Full review in Spanish]

While competently made and demonstrating Watts' assured talent, the story and characters fail to engage in any way outside of disturbing us.

It was a great... take on a devil clown and it wasn't cheesy.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Jun 2, 2021
There isn't much here by way of narrative to justify a feature length title, hampered by a repetitive and vague third act which negates the surprisingly serious fortitude instilled in the set-up.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 30, 2020
Clown is an impressive feat... but sadly it's not nearly as rough as it needs to be to justify its existence.
| Original Score: 4.5/10 | Sep 27, 2019
A few niggles along the way, but an enjoyable watch nonetheless - it felt predictable in parts but also original in others.

It's hard to not recommend a film that's so unique, clever and ballsy in nature. Clown is still a great weekend rental, especially for horror fans sick of the generic crap being unloaded on a weekly basis.

Even as the movie wavers uncomfortably between outright comedy and subversive horror, Clown certainly paves the way for future genre film endeavors from the rising director.

In the era when context means everything, Clown makes the fatal mistake of believing its audience just doesn't care about one.
| Original Score: 0.5/4 | Oct 26, 2016
With Clown, Jon Watts has crafted a genuinely creepy and disturbing body horror experience unlike anything I've ever seen before.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 15, 2016
A lot of the gore feels just downright mean spirited, especially when children become the primary targets.

[Blu-ray Review] Classy and icky, atmospheric and chilling, "Clown" astutely plays into the unknown mystique coulrophobia is made of. Highly recommended.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 12, 2016
While clowns are scary to many, filmmakers Christopher Ford and Jon Watts give the white-faced subject matter behind this loathsome horror movie only a cursory exploration; the result isn't much fun.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Jul 1, 2016
... features an intriguing premise and some unsettling weirdness, yet many of the plot twists feel arbitrary and the suspense seems dialed back in favor of obligatory gore.

I would ask any up-and-coming special-effects artist: Just because you can mold a convincing replica of a 6-year-old's severed arm, does it necessarily mean that you should?

Clown struggles to balance seedy horror moments and B-Movie laughs, which makes for a tonally ambiguous watch that's too serious for comfort.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Jun 17, 2016
It comes apart about halfway through, losing a very difficult tonal balance. Having said that, there's more to like here than the studio burial would have you believe.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jun 17, 2016
"Clown" has the goods. Refreshingly dark and sick, this is a movie for those who like cinematic monsters that hit so hard they leave a mark.

Watts shows early signs of style, but there's clearly a reason why his first film was buried for years.
| Original Score: C- | Jun 16, 2016
Jon Watts does nothing with the scarily funny notion of a respectable professional who suddenly refuses to shuck a party costume.
