Daddio Reviews
2 stellar performances. Dakota easily holds her own against Sean.
This was a captivating piece. All shot in a cab. Intimate, natural, conversational. Sean Penn plays the Brooklyn cabbie to a tee. Dakota Johnson is actually really great in managing her mien through engaged conversation and banter with Penn to angst about her relationships and backstory. Other than an occasional traffic shot on the outside it is all close up face time for the two actors. The is a lot of profanity. Conversational and not animated. Almost too much when you seem to get an F-Bomb every 10 seconds at times. Kind of distracts from the story. Also, there are a couple of screen shots and sex-act references which some may consider disturbing. Johnson has never looked lovelier and Penn never more authentic.
A wonderful & beautiful film.
I didn’t care for the nudity. and the sexting. Sean Penn was good at providing real input into the issues. The character Dakotah played was used to being abused and ignored growing up so her current relationship continues that theme.
So refreshing to see authentic human connection on the big screen. If you're tired of the pew pew pow pow of the superhero takeover, then this film is for you! Great writing and A level actors getting to sink their teeth into juicy roles. Writer/director Christy Hall is a super talent and delivers a compelling story, simply but elegantly told. I hope major studios keep investing in projects like this - loved it!
What an amazing movie and amazing acting. Beautiful story and dialogue but it is not for everyone. You have to be a “human” for this movie to touch you.
Dakota Johnson and Sean Paul are good actors and worth watching
An interesting character piece with skilled performances from Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn who give us an entertaining conversation between really the only two characters in the film.
I could not take my eyes off Dakota Johnson!! And Sean Penn was also amazing! I loved the story as it kept evolving during their ride which, in my opinion, could have been longer!! I truly lost track of the time.
Just such the natural way that two people could open up and have a conversation with each other and form a friendship while driving and riding in a cab. To show that as humans when we are t afraid to open up and speak to others we find that we all share some sort of similarities
Slow start, but began to grab my attention as the trip got underway. Sean Penn goes from wiseass to empathetic as Dakota Johnson reveals more and more . Together they open up old wounds and as the texts appear from an unseen lover, I became transfixed. The ending could have gone either way, but I walked away thinking that in the end, nothing would change with either of the characters. With only two people conversing throughout, it was compelling.
Great acting by both actors - made their characters real and relatable...
Empathy. The more they sit with and learn about each other the more they shut up and listen.
This film was artfully directed and all in the confines of a yellow NYC taxi cab. Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn are fabulous together-- the honest and raw conversation says a lot about what we are willing to share with a complete stranger, as opposed to a close friend or family. This film is brilliant!!
The most original movie I've seen in a year...although it isn't hard. The interplay between Johnson and Penn were believable and riveting and the movie flew by...
Really captivating performance from both Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn. A total breath of fresh air amongst the overstimulating movies that desensitize the audience. Daddio held my attention from beginning to end, without the usual hipster , Oscar-pandering and seeking screenwriting attempts. Great film! Im sure it will start a trend and become a prominent reference for scene study for film students.
I can see how this could be polarizing. But these kinds of stories are my jam. Felt so raw and real.
Brilliant performance by both Penn and Johnson. Penn's best role to date, hope he gets his 3rd Oscar for this role
Fantastic surprise, instantly intimate and great story telling. The music was also very god and kept you hanging on every intense detail. We need more , crave more!!!
Exceptionally brilliant movie with fantastic performances from Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn. I forgot that movies can be made with conversations only without all the special effects and action sequences. This is how movies are supposed to be made.
