The Edge, for all its hokiness, makes it real. When Hopkins comes down from the mountain, I believed he was looking at the world with new eyes.

It's not hard to read Charles' journey in 'The Edge' as analogous to its author's: the library-dwelling intellectual using his wits to brave rougher elements.

There is a lot to enjoy here. Tamahori's second Hollywood outing is economically directed, the scenery is spectacular and beautifully shot by Donald M. McAlpine and the initial air crash rivals Alive for its sudden, chaotic realism.
