The Edge Reviews
This is a mixed bag. The bad: the music, dialogue, plot and conflict is revolving and repetitive. The director telegrams every twist. The good: the photography, baldwins screen chewing, and Hopkins incredibly layered performance are well worth a watch
Good cast great scenery good entertainment
The Jaws of Grizzle Bear films.
The Edge is a surprisingly absorbing thriller, and it does have a well-written dialogue from David Mamet’s screenplay.
It was pretty good but kind of predictable. Anthony Hopkins was exceptional as usual and Alec Baldwin was very annoying. It actually got kind of long and I don't think I'd ever watch it y.
One of my favorite survival movies, cause it makes u hungry for the wild..
"Why is the rabbit unafraid? Because he's smarter then the panther!" Top of my, 'Favorite Survival Films' list that never gets dull regardless or repeated viewings. A plane crash under a freezing lake, survivng the bitter cold Alaskan wilderness, battling a grizzly to the death, fighting the odds with Sir Anthony Hopkins at your side...what's not to love! Great acting, great characters, great score, great synopsis!
I've watched this a gazillion times and it's my joint favourite film of all time along with Batman Begins. It got me through many dark times. I'm gonna kill the bear!
Remember watching this movie as a kid and now I'm 37 and I've seen many survival movies being an outdoorsy guy. Still the best survival movie and the most realistic in my opinion I've seen it at least 10 times. The fact that use a real bear and not CGI is all the difference.
Great cast, a real shame it went for sssoooo long. The Bear was the cherry on top 🙌❤️
Director Lee Tamahori makes a wilderness survival thriller starring Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin Hopkins is Charles Morse, he’s fabulously wealthy exploring the Alaskan wilderness One of the passengers is Baldwin as photographer Robert Green During the trip the plane unexpectedly crashes and the two men have to rely on one another to make it back to civilization But their trust starts to wane; it’s not only the elements they have to combat next to a Kodiak bear but the notion that Charles believes that Robert was having an affair with his beautiful wife Charles at any point could abandon him or kill him leaving only himself as the sole survivor, he’s the more paranoid of the bunch yet he’s the most intellectual being a rich literate Robert assures him he’s a professional but can’t make sense of the situation One can only teeter on the edge of sanity for so long when it comes to survival The Alaskan backdrop is gorgeous yet you also feel the immense danger surrounding Both actors work immensely well together and the score by Jerry Goldsmith is beautiful There’s some hokiness and it doesn’t bite as much as it should but it uses a lot of Mamet to it’s advantage being quite cerebral
Anthony Hopkins carries the film and the setting fits well enough, but everything else is kind of take it-or-leave it. - high-strong mixed 🍀
It's an amazing film, The Edge, 1997...with the favourite actor, Anthony Hopkins as well as Harold Perrineau, as "Stephen"...written by David Mamet and directed by Lee Tamahori...
Hopkins certainly carries it, but some intense action and some decently interesting drama keeps it from becoming a pointless creature feature.
Hopkins and Baldwin are trying to survive the cold and a blood thirsty bear after their plane crashes. But they're also secretly enemies, with Elle MacPherson standing cooly by back at the lodge. There's some bad bear scenes and some obvious story problems, but overall it's entertaining.
In 1997 this was a good action/drama flick. In 2023 it is an epic masterpiece. I'm shocked on how good this movie is by today's standards. I didn't appreciate this movie for what it was back in 1997, but now I see how blind I was.
This movie is excellent. No CGI or stupid effects, just a really scary grizzly bear and top notch actors. John Hopkins is at his best in this movie, you will be on the edge of your seat the whole time. There are several twists and turns throughout and I consider this movie one of the great classics for survival movies.
Effectively unnerving but never entertaining.
An old business man finds his inner survivalist when he and two others get stranded in the wildness.
One of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Superb acting. Unexpected twists. Great cinematography. A film that has always stayed with me since I first saw it in the theater.
