Emily Reviews

Wonderful film. Used to love these old English literary classic kind of films in my teens/early 20s but thought I grew out of them. This has definitely reignited the love. In my early 30s now and this was just brilliant.

I know some people say this isn’t accurate, but it’s such an amazing story. Great acting aswell. I absolutely loved it. I got a sense that emily was autistic aswell. Not that she definitely was, but a lot of the traits are there in this movie. She was so misunderstood, very relatable to many talented autistic girls and women

A poetic, beautifully shot and acted film

This is a beautifully imagined portrait of Emily Bronte. It is apparently a fictionalized account designed to illustrate and explain a genius who lived far from the cultural and literary centers of England, but who nonetheless succeeded in writing one of the most epic and well-read English novels. I found this characterization enchanting and captivating. The script, acting, and cinematography are outstanding. I found the movie beautiful and fascinating!

A genre typical, emotional period drama. Well acted.

I liked the beginning of this story about Emily Brontë and her family. It is a missed opportunity however. The promise of a female protagonist in all her imperfect glory is marred by a silly romance with a new curate in her village. This really could have been a fine exploration of sisters and the dynamics of relationships between women. Emily Brontë never married. Maybe it's possible she never wanted anyone in that way. There are asexual people in our society. It's quite possible she was one of them. Why does almost every film made about a woman have to have some kind of sexual relationship? Why can't sisterhood and the relationships between women be enough? It is lovely and meandering, the cinematography lyrical across the moors. I did enjoy parts of this film despite the silly, pointless romance. But to all filmmakers: why do women have to always have a "love" interest? Some people could really care less about these kinds of entanglements and quite prefer to spend their energies elsewhere, do things that matter far more that sex. Which can be a real disappointment, can't it? Most men can't find it with a magnifying glass. Her tears over William are boring. I can't imagine a curate being terribly good at sex. Snore.

Emma Mackey as Emily Brontë in a mostly fictional (probably) account of Brontë's life leading up to her penning of Wuthering Heights. The music is a character in and of itself, but it's Mackey who steals the show in what would generally be a bore of a film. Great acting, haunting thoughts, and beauty everywhere (plus a pretty good story to boot). It's too long and often is slow, but it is engaging and if you watch it on Kanopy there's a good chance you might want to play this at 1.5!

As a fan of the bronte sisters' books, I really enjoyed it. It wasn't a 'box ticker' or political like most movies, making it all the better to watch.

Emily This biopic drama tells an imagined relationship between English Writer Emily Brontë and the young curate William Weightman. In this, Emily has a short-lived romantic entanglement with the curate before she wrote the now English classic Wuthering Heights. Emma Mackey in the lead role brings a shy and subdued performance to Emily Brontë, and the supporting cast adequately balance it all. Barely a biopic due to the staggering liberties taken, but Emily is a well-acted, well-shot and well-directed flick. 6.5/10

A movie with a whole lot of nothing. Good for if it's raining and you have nothing else to do

Wow! Emily Brontë is rolling over in her grave. It is not even remotely "semi-fictional," but a complete fabrication of her life, with little factual biographic information. I only hope the writer who propagated this story, has their life misrepresented as badly as they did Ms. Brontë's. Shameful!

The acting and production are solid, and overall, the movie is entertaining enough. But historically accurate it is not. Even if you don't know anything about the life of Emily Bronte the sense of manufactured melodrama is hard to escape.

Spoilers: I'm sold. On Emma Mackey. I've seen her act well before, but this time, she was magnificent. A picture of someone who was centered in herself. Not self-centered. She was seen as strange because few are centered, just full of fake smiles, pleasing the powers, go along get along. She was by nature quiet, but she was too truthful to let the world denigrate or co-opt her, so seen as difficult. When she got an arm tattoo that said Freedom of Thought, as her rowdy brother had on his arm, it was her declaration of independence and a slap at religion and social mores, as she had an affair with the local preacher, who first chided her then loved her, then dumped her. Her brother, jealous of Emily, declined to give her a letter from the preacher wanting back again after all. Then the preacher died. So she decided to be a serious writer and out popped Wuthering Heights, which drew wrath of establishment religious types who eschewed items such as raw passion, sex outside of marriage and such. Without her fierce independence and drive to speak truly, we would have missed this masterpiece. All because she fought through all the charges she was "anti-". Asked why the Beatles were so anti- so much, John Lennon said: "The only thing we are anti- is anti-bullsh-t." Out in the rain, she caught illness and died at 30, probably depriving us of God knows what. Bravo, Emma! Well done all around, with very good acting and writing.

All I can say is... Wow!

Dreadful. Emily was such an unlikeable character and it was totally unbelievable that she was having casual sex with a vicar

I absolutely loved this movie - tragic but exhilarating all at the same time. Shows how people are people no matter what era or culture. There's the typical controlling family members but shows how love in different forms can free oneself and hold one prisoner as well. A must see flick imho…

I am a huge Bronte fan. This was such an unconventional, beautiful movie. Timelines differ from the actual history but for me the whole worked as a fiction. Really enjoyed it.

The strange atmosphere of this movie will make you stay till the end of it. The actors are really great, Emma Mackey is as usual fitting the role perfectly. The photography is also great. I only deplore the love story, it was in my opinion not necessary and too cliché, even if it's far from beinga reason not to see the movie, and this "side quest" doesn't take too much space in the story.
