EMMA. Reviews

A cliche-packed bore. Too much time is spent panning the decor and scenery and the dialog is full of "quaint" quips that will make you groan. Painful to watch.

It is the most lively adaptation out of all of them. Anna-Taylor Joy is a delight. It looks vivid, lively, colorful and the sets and costume designs are so intricate. Jane Austen was a woman ahead of her times in writing characters trying to find that love can outshine all other obstacles from class to social order.

Phenomenal adaptation. Hilarious, beautifully filmed, witty, and well-acted. Rewards multiple viewings. Easily one of my favorite Jane Austen adaptations and I’ve seen them all, many times.

Affected and charmless. Like they're reading the lines, and acting out their suppressed emotions

It's just horrible. The only good thing is the costumes. I would have given it 0 stars if I could

This feels like Wes Anderson meets Jane Austen in the best way. The actors felt spot on and the visuals were stunning. I love how conceited Anya Taylor Joy's depiction of Emma is at the beginning so thay we can see the juicy messes it causes before she grows to be a better person. My dad and I have watched this countless times already and it has convinced him to start reading Jane Austen. I have a thing for very flawed protagonists, so I loved this!

J'ai adoré, esthétiquement le film est super, l'histoire en elle-même n'est pas passionnante mais cela reste un bon film.

I love this version of Emma! I say 4 stars because some scenes are a little unnecessary, but who cares when the cinematography is so 😚👌🏻 it doesn’t matter! The acting is great, comedy is great, setting was well done, costumes looked fabulous… there are many reasons to like this movie!

Far and away the best adaptation of Emma thus far, in my opinion. It's quite true to the story of the book, beautiful to look at, funny, sweet, and bright. Feels modern and updated but not too separated from the time period of the story, highly recommend this one!

Admittedly in the book Emma is quite childish and I understand they were trying to approach a Jane Austen story with some humor but some of this was just weird. The characters seemed like they didn't really fit in and they weren't really all that likeable. I've watched other versions of Emma multiple times, I wouldn't watch this a second time.

Proof that modern Austen film adaptations not only have merit but that there are still new things to explore. Most importantly, its quite funny while managing to not engage in too many anachronisms.

This was so bizarre. I guess it just wasn't my style of visuals or humor.

Started watching it and quickly realized that it is a masterpiece but I am missing plot details. Stopped watching it to read a book (never read it before) then started watching it all over again. Total enjoinment!! Kept rewinding each episode over and over, so much details in each character acting. Excellent costumes, beautiful interiors. tremendous outdoors. On top of that I have just cot back from England where I traveled across British countryside and small historical cities/villages so I have just seen this all pretty much with my own eyes.

Emma is a self-proclaimed matchmaker who meddles in the romantic relationships of her friends. Her misguided matches and romantic missteps lead her to find love that has been there all along. Emma is another Jane Austen based movie, but actually done right. I am really surprised by how much I adore this film. The movie opens solidly, you are introduced to the world of royalty and the characters that live in it, but you are still searching for what the story is going to be, but when you are used to this world and tone, the movie flows naturally by. Anya Taylor-Joy was by far my favorite performance of this movie, and I would have liked to have seen her nominated for this absolutely stunning performance. Mia Goth and the rest of the cast is great as well, and Miranda Hart has a great supporting role, she is really funny and still emotionally impactful in moments towards the end of the film. I must say, the editing was almost flawless, it surprised me how good it was. The style and tone absolutely clicked for me, I just wanted to be there, sit by the fire, dance in the evening and ride in the dark. The movie brilliantly balances humor and drama together, to the point you are laughing and almost crying at the same time. Sure the story is a bit simple at the surface, but with all the character development and twist/turns going around, the movie feels more complex, then you thought at the surface. Overall, I am in love with this movie, a stunning Jane Austen adaptation, a stunning period film and a stunning character study, that knows how to balance itself, I would absolutely recommend this to everybody, especially for fans of this genre!

Very bright and colorful through cinematography as well as humor!

I wasn't sure the first time, but on second viewing I really enjoyed this. It doesn't have the same romantic pull as the 2009 mini series with Jonny Lee Miller and Romola Garai (which is my favourite Emma adaptation), but it's clever, satirical and very funny. It definitely captures Austen's playfulness and wit and the character of Emma is really quite unlikeable, which Austen herself acknowledged. Callum Turner as Frank Churchill is a bit disappointing, but I loved Josh O'Connor as Mr Elton! Lots of fun, apart from that scene involving noses - ugh!

To me this is a nearly perfect adaptation of Emma. It's actually witty and funny, and the pastoral comedy is well executed. From the direction, the script, the actors, and especially the costumes, it absolutely shines. You can always tell when a film is so well loved by those making it. This has become my favorite adaptation of an Austen novel, just barely beating out Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice.

Trying to be modern and antique at the same time simply doesn't work. Version with Gwinnett Paltrow is so much better. And I did read the book.
