Event Horizon Reviews

Although its final act falls apart, "Event Horizon" initially soars on the hubristic context of "We can and so we will." That's a fast way to make meals of minds and meaning, and so much of its production design resembles an eternally insatiable mouth.

With inspirations varying from Hieronymus Bosch and Warhammer 40,000 to the literal architecture of the Notre Dame Cathedral and Fritz Lang, Paul WS Anderson’s ... Event Horizon [is] one of the great 20th-century space-horror films.

| Jul 22, 2024

... he screenplay is not nearly as inventive as the production design and it turns into a woefully inconsistent psychic monster movie that sacrifices mood for tepid shocks.

[Production designer Joseph Bennett's] sets never fail to give Event Horizon’s audience the willies. His work is good enough to surpass Anderson’s substandard direction, demand that viewers overlook the plot, and watch simply for the visual artistry.

…Event Horizon isn’t a great movie…but it’s a beautiful ruin, far better to look at than most 90’s films, and the mix of CGI and physical effects gels on an aesthetic level….

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 27, 2023

Approaches some very silly third-tier post-Lovecraft nonsense with a enthusiastic desire to make it the most enjoyably trashy version of itself possible.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jun 29, 2023

This is one of Anderson’s best films, offering genuine scares and a visionary design.

| Original Score: 4/4 | Feb 4, 2023

Since its release, 25 years ago, it has taken on quite the following, and for many, it is because of its spectacularly disturbing mashup of camp and horror, sci-fi, and well, Sam Neill.

If Alien was a slasher movie on a spaceship, this is a haunted house movie on a spaceship. Much more likely to please gorehounds than science-fiction fans. [4K Blu-ray]

| Original Score: 2/4 | Aug 19, 2022

Worth a watch as it starts off slow and then gets better as it goes along.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 10, 2022

In the end, and at least 30 minutes before, you get the idea that you're stranded in empty space.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 1, 2022

The movie might never step out of the formidable shadow cast by Aliens, but Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill embrace their roles as the cynical Captain Miller and idealistic engineer Weir to keep things watchable.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 1, 2021

I didn't think many of the actors gave convincing performances that highlighted the insanity of what was happening around them. The stakes weren't there for the majority of the film for me.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 15, 2021

This isn't necessarily a bad movie but some of the death scenes were just ridiculously brutal. It was disturbing.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 15, 2021

Event Horizon feels like a once-in-a-lifetime cinematic excursion in sci-fi and pure, unfiltered horror that rarely ever comes along out of the studio system.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 24, 2021

Still one of the best space horror films ever made...

| Original Score: 4.8/5 | Apr 3, 2021

It should be noted that this critical and commercial underachiever has over time emerged as the best of Paul W.S. Anderson's films.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Mar 27, 2021

After a very promising opening two-thirds, it all goes a little pear-shaped.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 15, 2020

As the riddles unfold, characters wander off alone down dimly lit crawlspaces - to be terrorized by spectral visions and, smartly, disbelief from the crew members.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Sep 11, 2020

A movie where the contours of the cut ideas are more interesting than what ended up on the screen.
