Fire Island Reviews
Much like the source material, there’s a whole lot of seriousness in this seemingly fluffy love story, with discussions of racism, classism, and body dysmorphia swirling around the romantic tension Austen is still revered for centuries later..

The characters deserve more autonomy: they're a likeable bunch and the film's best asset.

Kim Booster is the star of the show, and a genuine find. He trained in advertising and comedy in Chicago, became a stand-up comedian and moved to New York. His script is nuanced, funny, right up-to-the-minute with its fads and jargon, and very pointed.

I’ve never seen a film take on a relatively common and flagrantly cruel catchphrase from gay men’s dating apps — “No fats, no fems, no Asians” — so squarely.

Fire Island has no business being as good as it is.

Joel Kim Booster, hear our plea: do "Sense and Sensibility" next.
| Original Score: B+ | Jun 11, 2022
There’s a winning case being made here for Booster as leading-man material, but perhaps more importantly, there’s also a territorial flag being planted in a genre that has long relegated gay people to quirky sidekick and/or moral-support roles.

The film uses cliché and wackiness cleverly, as a cover for bittersweet realism.

It still feels like less than a full meal... Fire Island doesn't quite possess enough substance to sustain itself, which might have explained the appeal of Quibi's short-form approach for this particular property.

If Clueless is the definitive modern-day adaptation of Emma, then Fire Island deserves the same crown for Pride and Prejudice.

Director Andrew Ahn proficiently handles the numerous plot lines, character conflicts, and the tonal shifts between raunch and sweetness.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jun 3, 2022
Fire Island feels hemmed in by its source material even when being loose and irreverent with it.

If you’ve never spent a summer weekend on Fire Island, Andrew Ahn’s new film, Fire Island, will make you desperate to hop the next ferry.

The cute romantic comedy “Fire Island” takes the story of “Pride and Prejudice” and really amps up the “Pride.”
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jun 2, 2022
Funny and romantic...unabashedly open about the specifics of the culture but completely relatable in its depiction of friendship and chosen families.
| Original Score: B+ | Jun 2, 2022
Fire Island is a true, escapist romcom at a time when audiences are still undernourished when it comes to queer romances that don’t end in death and despair.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 2, 2022
It’s commendable that the film so frankly, so airily, depicts the island’s carnal indulgences. Maybe that all of that sits so discordantly alongside the mushier, gentler stuff is a worthy approximation of what it is to be on Fire Island.

It’s laughter and it’s loving that Ahn’s “Fire Island” gleefully contains.
| Jun 2, 2022
Grounding the lightness and frivolity with real heart, Booster’s laugh out loud script and Ahn’s artistic corralling of the energetic ensemble is a match made in heaven -- or gay paradise.

The nicest surprise is that Bowen Yang, who seems stuck in loud irreverence as a cast member of "Saturday Night Live," demonstrates subtler dimensions of his talent.
