The Godfather, Part III Reviews

The Godfather Part III is both better than its reputation and not good enough for a reclamation project. It’s a mediocre movie that has the misfortune of trying to recapture the magic of two of the greatest movies ever made.

Starts off strong, becomes bogged down in expository dialogue, and finishes with an anti-climactic climax.

| Original Score: 2/4 | May 9, 2023

It's sad to see a film with so many good things fall under the weight of so many bad things. [Full review in Spanish]

I consider this third part of the Godfather trilogy a worthy conclusion to the greatest American movie epic of the past two decades -- and an underrated masterpiece in its own right.

Nowhere near as good as the first two installments of the trilogy, but Part III does enough right to close out the Corleone saga in solid fashion. Full review in Spanish

It's a mixed bag of a movie, with some strong sequences and several potent performances (particularly by Al Pacino and Andy Garcia) competing against a meandering storyline and the absence of Robert Duvall and Winona Ryder.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Apr 9, 2022

Offsetting its convoluted story line, the film has two outstanding assets. Its art direction is faultless; its locations are monumental -- especially the Vatican and an opera house in Palermo.

The Godfather films have set home-video standards for decades, and that trend continues with Paramounts astonishing 4K restorations.

| Mar 18, 2022

Sofia Coppola, making a horrendous leading-role debut, is perhaps the single most significant reason why this film was not nearly as well received as the previous two entries.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Sep 14, 2020

Countless set-pieces, both intimate and explosively violent, build intoxicating tension.

| May 19, 2020

Allows us to take in the full scope of Michael Corleone's (Al Pacino) tragic journey - from optimistic military veteran to cruel crime boss to emotionally shattered old man.

That The Godfather, Part III works up any grandeur at all is a tribute to the luridly baroque plotting of Coppola and Mario Puzo and the fierce and apparently ineradicable residue of artistic honor still left inside Coppola.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 5, 2018

The movie has received an unfair amount of at times very petty criticism for the unspeakable crime of being a worse film two of the most highly-regarded American films ever made.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 27, 2017

[...] a crushing disappointment. It's a sluggish movie with nothing to say about the moral rot of the powerful that the first two parts didn't say much better [...]

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | May 12, 2014

The film is a slow fuse with a big bang -- one that echoes through every family whose own tragedy is an aching for things past and loved ones lost.

| Mar 28, 2011

The third (and final) chapter of Coppola's epic crima saga is the weakest in terms of narrative and acting, but it still has artistic merits.

| Original Score: B | Mar 9, 2011

The third and final Godfather saga; not for kids.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 1, 2011

This hits have gotten bigger, and the violence has gotten bloodier. It's less of an examination of family and more of a character piece for Michael.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 8, 2008

While it's better than your average film in a lot of respects, it simply cannot hold up to the legacy of its predecessors.

...didn't live up to expectations but turned out to be a pretty good movie in any case.
