Grumpy Old Men Reviews
...a slightly overlong yet predominantly affable comedy...
| Original Score: 3/4 | Apr 6, 2025
This is formula comedy all the way but somehow the skimpy plot and rehashed situations prove amusing in a leisurely not irritating way.

Oh, to have been a senior citizen at the height of the Grumpy Old Men films. What dreams may come.

Few movies of this increasingly burgeoning genre have reached the same heights, today’s efforts increasingly sanitised, formularised and joyless. Everything Grumpy Old Men is most certainly not.

Although the script isn't quite as strong as it could be, the chemistry between the two stars is irresistible and they are matched by an equally strong supporting cast that includes Burgess Meredith, Kevin Pollak and Ossie Davis.

Watching Matthau and Lemmon in this vehicle is sometimes hard to stomach after knowing that they are worthy of so much more.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 5, 2020
They're two saints of sarcasm. And they work their magic here with only the flimsiest sitcom structure to support them.

Whether Grumpy Old Men will bring out the ornery elderly population is anybody's guess. But young and old alike may find something to like here.

Where Lemmon begs for our approval, Matthau barely bothers to perform. An odd couple indeed.

In their prime, the by-play of these two (Lemmon and Matthau) was like an entertainingly bad marriage, but time has made their antagonism seem perfunctory, and the rapport that underlies it somehow smug.

So-so comedy with insults, sexual humor. No kid appeal.
| Original Score: 2/5 | May 6, 2014
the real reason this movie works is the fantastic, decades-honed chemistry of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Sep 21, 2010
A funny, often hilarious, film that proves that a story doesn't need to be completely new just as long as there's a spin on it to make it different.

Irresistible...the prime hams and real-life friends share comic timing that can only come from years of experience. [Blu-ray]
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jul 15, 2009
...sort of a one-note picture, but luckily that one note is often pretty humorous.
| Original Score: 6/10 | Jun 26, 2009
What ruins the fun is the prattling need for structure outside the central rivalry

Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon are awfully good at this sort of thing.

Though supported by a stellar ensemble running the gamut of their seriocomic paces, it's not enough to distract viewers from script holes large enough to drive a snowplow through.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Aug 24, 2008
[Lemmon and Matthau] made much worse in the next few years.

Mediocre, regrettably.
