Guns Akimbo Reviews

Daniel Radcliffe is very good in this movie, but the film starts to lose steam once you realize that it doesn't really have much else to offer beyond these high-energy action sequences.

| Original Score: B- | Jun 17, 2020

Howden's film gives itself a good three minutes to play the amateur satirist before it abandons any pretense of cultural commentary and instead embraces every cliché it repeatedly insists it is undermining.

I don't get what's going on here. Are we trolling these internet guys are not? Are we saying this is okay or not? Because he wins when he does what they do.

Some of the best parts are learning how hard it is to go through everyday life when you have guns for hands... Where the film falters is when it tries to be something profound.

[A] brash, crass, often mind-numbing ride.

| Feb 27, 2020

A satire of overamped gamer culture that is itself too overamped to be much fun...

Writer-director Jason Lei Howden's humor might have been tolerable if his film was at least reasonably imaginative.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Feb 24, 2020

Kind of fun if you don't expect more from it than a bratty, gore-soaked sci-fi/action black comedy about a shy gamer who learns to stop worrying and accept that he's part of an online community full of desensitized players and bloodthirsty trolls.

The best bits of Guns Akimbo are when Howden leans away from the well-trod video game tropes and fanboy fantasies...

| Sep 29, 2019

A spectacularly fun and exciting time whenever the needle drops and Weaving owns her badass, gun-wielding image.

Anyone with an attention span above ADD levels... is likely to find this undeniably slick, energetic contraption plays somewhere between grating and numbing.

| Sep 14, 2019

An expertly crafted thrill that'll electrify a midnight crowd. It's super ambitious and irresistibly flashy. Director Jason Lei Howden is the real deal and it's only a matter of time before more take notice.

| Original Score: B | Sep 13, 2019

It's somehow exhausting but not exhilarating, a non-stop chase scene that would be a good deal more fun if not getting caught seemed even like a one-in-a-million prospect.
