Hanging Up Reviews
Though treated tactfully, the impending death of a father and the memories it engenders didn't really require all the star power of this movie (Meg Ryan, Diane Keaton - who directed, Lisa Kudrow and Walter Mathau). On the other hand, this movie didn't age too badly - 23 years later it's at least still pleasant and brought a few laughs.
It's the first film that comes to mind when someone asks, "What's the worst movie you have ever seen?"
I really love the actors but a painful drag of a movie. The son laughing was hilarious. But no real character development. Self-centered... a family in need of Recovery. Goes nowhere 😢
While the three leads do a commendable job for the most part, it is the script that kills this adaptation into a dull, forgettable, ham-fisted shlock. 2/5 stars
I remember watching this movie many years ago and thinking it was entertaining and touching. I find it surprising the way EVERYONE on here just rips it to shreds. The acting was great in it and the story line does have a very human element. It's a good movie I think.
Meg Ryan was nice and still pretty in this one ,Walter Matthau had a few funny lines to...but the chaos on the phones gets disturbing after 15 minutes , glad Meg put all the phones out off the wall after 60 minutes and talk face to face to her sisters ! Seen better with Meg . SOMDVD
Diane Keaton is a solid actress that has proven herself through her longevity and body of work. now Keaton as a director is definitely not living up to her reputation. This film was painful to watch and felt like an overload of estrogen running wild, with three actresses going nuts, babbling silly lines on screen and ending up boring us to death. The film is also horribly lit and look like one of these cheap 온라인카지노추천 soap opera from the 90's. For some it may bring answers to their family ties neurosis but for me it was like sitting through one of the most boring, superficial and overacted film. Even the three leads could not save the journey and Meg Ryan in all her cuteness and audience appeal seems to wonder what the heck she's doing in this melodrama. Diane Keaton is very Diane Keaton and Lisa Kudrow is not much of an addition to this insipid and vacuous effort. No definitely a miss and a big one.
***Due to the recent RT changes that have basically ruined my past reviews, I am mostly only giving a rating rather than a full review.***
The kind of story this film holds would have a warming heart, but lack it until the last few minutes. Although you can enjoy the acceptable cast that are good, even though some acting were somewhat not being tried in this adaptation with a sad tone that's probably more affective to a specific audience. (B-) (Full review coming soon)
Meg Ryan, as always, is quirky, quick witted, and down to earth in an always relatable way. In my own life I have had to play the role of the family backbone by keeping watch over my sisters to make sure they succeed in their ambitions, obtain unconditional love, and never look back with regret... among other things. But my most important role I have been given, could be titled, in a general way as "care taker". My mother was never too interested in anyone besides herself. My father was extremely ill my entire life and over the years I watched him deteriorate before me, slowly and painfully. Forgetting I was his own flesh and blood. Forgetting his own identity. And scared to death multiple times a day when he came to realization how far gone his brain was from his body. Besides Meg Ryan's perfect portrayal of a woman in this kind of extreme high stress- high emotional position, of what actually happens to a family in this situation. To the people that have reviewed this and say different haven't experienced the small quirks that destroy your heart moment by moment and the small quirks that keep your love for these people so strong it becomes loyalty no one can understand. Words are said with a much stronger impact than understandable unless you have walked a mile in our shoes. Love your sick drunk father that loves you more than life but spills slurs that are completely unforgivable. Or forget him forever because he has become intolerable and cruel in a way that should never be stood for because of his dementia. I love this movie and it's perfect portrayal of this situation. Welcome to the life of just a few people that have to go through this.
aggressively boring, it just sits on the screen like a rock. actually, a rock would have been an upgrade.
I just can't believe this movie didn't get better reviews. Walter Matthau is amazing, as usual, if not better than usual. This movie has made me laugh, and every single time, has made me cry. And I value it as Matthaus last film.
I LOVED IT! If there are any Walter Matthau fans and have not seen this movie, I totally reccomend it. This was indeed the last movie that he was in before he passed away in July 2000.
I randomly discovered this film when it came up as a recommendation on a webpage for a film I hated. I have no idea why, but I was drawn to it even though I watched no trailers and I was fully aware that the reviews from both critics and moviegoers were awful. Perhaps, being in my nature to seek terrible films, thought that this was going to satisfy my craving for a shitty film and go down as yet another chick flick I've given a poor rating to. Much to my utter astonishment, I actually really enjoyed Hanging Up, which really caught me off guard. This film seems to have been incorrectly marketed as some sort of comedy, as the poster would suggest, when in reality it is more of a drama than a comedy. I felt this film was a very effective and at times touching dramedy, thanks to the script and great acting from the cast members. While the film isn't a masterpiece, I cannot deny that I really enjoyed it and I think it is a misunderstood film that deserves another look. I love it and I will probably watch it many times in the future.
