Hell Fest Reviews
Hell Fest is not a well-rounded film, but it meets expectations by steeping the viewer in spooky imagery and squeezing some suspense out of its premise making it a worthwhile October watch.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Oct 9, 2024
The movie remains satisfying because it's not trying to approach the slasher genre from a place of irony or nostalgia, as many have in recent years.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Mar 11, 2022
While overly simplistic, Hell Fest does at least feature some nuances of female friendship.

...just a bunch of gooey stuff.

The introductions to the characters feel contrived and their dynamics are derivative, and the dialogue feels like a poor caricature of middle school speak.

It's not really a trick or a treat. Think throwaway instead.

Can frighten you only because it's so bad.

It may be a great setting, but what happens there is far too familiar, even cliché.

The movie might seem like nothing special on paper, but its simplicity is its greatest strength.

Hell Fest is a typical teen slasher film that's refreshingly free of demonic possession, but also free of originality.

The climax is badly planned. [Full Review in Spanish]

What sets this slasher apart is the detailed production design from Michael Perry with each set piece invoking a different style of horror film tradition and Tobe Hooper's body of work an obvious influence.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 3, 2019
An agreeably good-natured fright-fest that gleefully evokes the spirit of sideshow haunted houses.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jun 3, 2019
At its best, Hell Fest makes inspired use of its amusement-park setting, but it ultimately counts for naught when the plotting is this threadbare and the characters this insipid.

[Hell Fest] promises a frightful time if you are not very demanding of the genre. [Full review in Spanish]

Hell Fest is a horror movie that contributes very little in terms of narrative, scares or imagination. [Full Review in Spanish]

I want to go to this haunt. Like yesterday. This place is friggin' awesome.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Dec 10, 2018
It is a shame when a movie like this is let down by the very reason for its existence. A slasher movie is only as strong as its slasher and the fear that slasher creates.

For this coward, however, I found myself surprisingly enjoying HELL FEST. I enjoyed the characters and their interactions. The use of a haunted house attraction as the setting was pretty smart and led to a good mix of tension and earned fear releases.

It wasn't anything new, it was old riffs done in a way that was actually quite efficient.... The nastiest is the right level of nasty, the silliness is the right level of silly.
