Hellboy Reviews
It just might be the best looking superhero movie ever made.

The film itself is fantastic and so easy to fangirl all over; with an amazing cast and so much talent involved, it could not possibly fail, and it didn’t disappoint.
| Original Score: 9/10 | Nov 2, 2023
The experience rewards with palpable craft embedded into each facet, from character development to special effects. It’s treated like a majestic opus by a master filmmaker

Stands apart from other superhero action movies of its ilk as a film that's as emotionally impactful as it is gorgeous to watch.

The film deserves recognition for its innovative approach to visuals in a comic book adaptation, but loses points for trite dialogue from many of the supporting characters.
| Original Score: 6/10 | Sep 29, 2020
A rare intelligent and shrewd adaptation of a comic book, taking risks without taking its audience for granted.
| Original Score: 4/5 | May 12, 2020
There's a freshness and goofiness about Hellboy that defies the precision and exactitude of Guillermo del Toro's direction.

The film may not be thrill-a-minute entertainment like Superman, Spiderman or Batman. But this is precisely what makes it tick.

Ron Perlman, performing under a massive ember-red suit... is perfect as the cigar-puffing, wisecracking, kitten-loving demon who covertly battles supernatural monsters.

Guillermo del Toro's best film yet.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 17, 2016
It would be quite impossible to claim is that the filmmaker's love of his subject isn't apparent throughout every lovingly-crafted frame.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Aug 26, 2013
Probably one of the coolest comic book movies to come around in years...

When the movie's story line concentrates on the character of Hellboy and his relationships with those important to him, the film becomes a unique romp, with an exciting yet vulnerable superhero at the center who just happens to be the spawn of Satan.
| Apr 14, 2013
The screenplay has flashes of real wit, and Perlman is perfect in the title role.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Apr 14, 2013
Director Guillermo Del Toro captures some of the visual color, tone, and beauty of the comic book. But he sometimes makes you feel like you are reading it over someone else's shoulder, and that person takes too long to finish a page.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 24, 2010
Inventive but derivative, well performed yet slightly hokey, visually lush yet over-stylised.

Anyone can send an immense, computer-generated vegetable monster rampaging at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge, but it takes a special kind of imagination to do it in a way that's thrilling, emotionally complex, and rapturously beautiful all at once.

High concept fantasy through the eyes of creative genius of Guillermo del Toro

Hellboy both kicks butt and falls in love, in an adventure that is thrilling, funny and touching.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 7, 2008
A strong anti-superhero movie that turns the genre sideways.
