Hellboy Reviews
A masterpiece - at least in my opinion.
A very charming and pulpy action horror movie with some creative visuals and a strong charismatic performance by Ron Pearlman as the titular Hellboy. The makeup is fantastic and easily makes up for the somewhat dated CGI. I always love it when the government finds out early on that the paranormal threats are real and they have to team up with other paranormal entities to combat them. The professor surrogate father was charming and the love triangle was a bit cliché, but refreshingly avoidant of melodrama for a more subdued approach. I also love Hellboy’s little quirks like his love for cats and babe ruth bars. It’s not a comic masterpiece, but it’s not trying to be and it serves its purpose well as a fun simple paranormal action thriller.
Beloved but untrue to the source and Mignola's Red!
Imagine theres a good marvel movie out there. That movie would be this one.
"Hellboy" 20 years later, Guillermo del Toro action fantasy still stands as one of the best comic book adaptations. The story & visuals give what should be a small movie, a grand scale of an immense universe beyond our world, pass the mythical creatures & magic to the unimaginative evil. It's not so often I watch a movie where the actors all naturally fit into their roles, give an understanding of their performances & give a sense of being that character longer than they have, but the likes of Ron Perlman, Selma Blair & John Hurt, automatically do it. With so much elements of fantasy & horror, the visual effects are mixed well with the practical effects, creating some of the best on screen creature designs.
For some reason this was my favorite at that time, when my father showed this to me in front of the laptop, I immediately continued watching and now I'm still watching
Ron Perlman was so good as Hellboy in the movie, and the rest of the cast did a good job too. This had great practical effects and action scenes. It’s not as good Hellboy 2, but it’s still a really solid comic book movie
Muito bom esse filme.
This movie is a classic and Del Torro and Ron Perelman are just amazing when it comes to this movie!
The adaptation of Mike Mignola's underground comic was in good hands, and that is notorious for the inventiveness of Guillermo del Toro who, incidentally, would also bow to the imagination of H. P. Lovecraft. To enjoy with an extra-large bag of popcorn.
Vale a pena assistir, o universo de Hellboy é muito interessante e tem muito a ser explorado
This role was made for Ron Perlman. Excellent effects, and a wonderfully fantastical story. Dark and mystical, but charming and funny too!
As a kid, I grew up with this comic. Working with the restrictions he had, Guillermo del Toro hit it out of the park for the time.
Ron Pearlman is and will always be the, one, true Hellboy.
La historia es muy buena el efecto del cambio de escena es increíble los diálogos son chistosos el personaje es simpático
They don't make em like they used to.
20 years later and this ranks as one of director Guillermo del Toro's best works Adapted from the Dark Horse comics by Mike Magnola starring Ron Perlman, the late John Hurt, Doug Jones, David Hyde Pierce, Selma Blair The opening starts with American soldiers at Poland 1944 near the end of WWII Rasputin of the Czar Royal Family and his disciple Kroenen and their followers prepare to summon a demon from another dimension to fuel Adolf Hitler's vision of world domination He is stopped however; the soldiers seem victorious but something else came out A small red creature with a rock hand is found and adopted by Professor Trevor Broom and deemed the name Hellboy Cut to present day the professor is slowly dying yet still runs operations at the BPRD aka the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense They specialize in hunting down all kinds of supernatural beings keeping the world safe A new recruit has joined named John Myers to be partner for Hellboy But he's a bit egotistical, temperamental, jokey, and childish Other associates include Abraham Sapien, an aquatic creature who can read minds and Liz Sherman who uses pyrokinesis but she left the agency a while ago for fear of losing control Hellboy and her used to date as well But with Rasputin's return the world faces an apocalypse involving Hellboy himself (even though he is destined to bring about the end of everything) Perlman totally fits the bill playing this character and the makeup effects and prosthetics blend perfectly, he's an outlier among the more normal offerings of comic book characters we've grown accustomed to Del toro has such a unique love and feel for other worldly creatures, thankfully he doesn't shy away from using real props and costumes He has such a macabre sense of humor along with a distinct visual flair and this was his dream project for years I've never heard of the Dark Horse Comic by Mike Mignola, it was originally a throwaway idea at first by the creator himself Yet he became popular once he hit the stands in August 1993 showing up in crossovers, mini-series and one-shots The film can be a bit derivative and some of the dialogue can be quite trite but the movie manages to be quite colorful, visually interesting, expansive, funny, charming and atmospheric It's also rooted in occultism namely Nazi philosophy from the source material to HP Lovecraft The filmmakers even insert a two fathers-one son element representing the main characters conflict, with Perlman he's having fun playing the superhero without being so self-serious finding community in his own circle Hellboy even after all this time holds a unique style of filmmaking next to lavish production values
Haven't seen this wonderful super hero film in decades. The back story begins when the Nazis work to bring demons from hell to help them & shows Hellboy grown into a fighter for the good guys. Great special effects.
This movie was a blast from start to finish. Ron Perlman was such a Fantastic Hellboy. This movie is a instant Classic.
