Hellboy Reviews
Yeah, this is terrible.

It ends up simply being a franchise reboot damned to be restaged as its own bloody hell. Some things are better left dead.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 25, 2019
The anticipated reboot of the cult comic book character is, well, intense. And not in a good way, unless you really love your movies to be disjointed, tonally confused and really, really gory.

Hellboy 2019 proves that the source material is still magical enough to justify more screen time.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Apr 18, 2019
If it was my call, I'd write nothing about the movie and leave this space blank for readers' notes.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Apr 15, 2019
A film this crowded has to have some pleasures, but they mostly come in incidental details of art direction, mythological footnote or British character acting.
| Original Score: 5 | Apr 13, 2019
This all hurtles at a relentless, unforgiving pace, glued together with many, many crunchy guitar licks. You don't so much as watch this movie as submit to being pummeled by it.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 13, 2019
David Harbour is good, but this is nowhere near as good as previous Hellboy projects.
| Original Score: C- | Apr 12, 2019
An R-rated slog that's heavy on bad attitude and creative dismemberments, and completely missing the humane core of Mignola's original story.

This doesn't quite feel like the Hellboy we wanted, but it does feel like a throwback to anything goes '90s horror, complete with not so great CG and over the top monsters. A lot of them. Technically, it's a mess of a movie.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Apr 12, 2019
Watching Hellboy is my new personal idea of hell.
| Original Score: 0/4 | Apr 12, 2019
No one needed another Hellboy, let alone a wretched contraption whose single-word title suggests that it's an original, rather than the cynical enterprise it proves to be.

And over the course of two hours, the mania becomes exhausting and numbing.

Like two giant horns protruding from your noggin, "Hellboy" is one hell of a headache.
| Original Score: D | Apr 12, 2019
This is the Vitamix school of film-making. Cram everything into the blender, add gore and press "whizz".
| Original Score: 1/5 | Apr 12, 2019
In the end, the movie leaves us stuck with unmoving drama and increasingly numbing carnage, delivered with a hand as heavy as Hellboy's monstrously oversized right meathook.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Apr 12, 2019
Watching the "Hellboy" reboot is like eating a rice cake - you don't feel bad afterward, but at the same time you're not entirely sure you really experienced anything at all.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 12, 2019
The chief battle here isn't the one on screen between Hellboy and a sixth century witch; it's between Harbour and the uninspired gore and bland rock music in which his unfortunate first starring vehicle is soaked.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Apr 11, 2019
It's in tune with the current public taste for over-the-top horror. But it seems pointless regardless, as does the CGI overkill that turns every battle into a bloodbath leaving mutilated and decapitated bodies.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 11, 2019
Rendering all this stuff in photorealistic CGI does not necessarily add value. If we have to have more Hellboy movies and del Toro isn't going to make them, maybe they should be shot in black and white.
