Hellboy: The Crooked Man Reviews
It's like they decided to make a film like Robert Eggers, but make it about some comic book bullshit. All style and bugger all substance.
Entertainment that takes our “anti-hero” from hell to a “B-side” production, not being an adventure to save the world, but just a village (from itself). It has many flaws and few successes, but these satisfied me. A narrative that is closer to comic books, having horror as its base, leaving the protagonist more vulnerable, both in the fights and in the emotions, to the point where we don’t know how the fight between Hellboy and the Crooked Man will end…
As someone who’s seen every Hellboy film in theaters, this latest entry was a major letdown. The 2019 reboot got flak for being too dark and missing Ron Perlman, but at least it had strong visuals and a clear tone—it didn’t deserve as much hate as it got. This version has none of the charm, story, or visual quality. I’ve seen fan films on YouTube do a better job on a fraction of the budget. The cast gave it their best and made the film watchable, but the weak script and poor execution dragged everything down. If you want to see Hellboy done right, stick to the originals. This one’s not worth your time.
Felt let down by the way it was presented, lots of special effects but the story and how Hellboy was put over didn't keep me on my seat.
Tactile, Atmospheric and Creepy. This will appeal to horror, film noir and old style cinema fans. The SFX fit the scenes organically. It's not action packed like the other Hollywood versions. I'm guessing the fans of the other Hellboy films will not enjoy it as much. It's a great film to watch in the dark or by candlelight. The pace can seem slow. Lots of interaction between the characters. Well story boarded, great camera angles, dream states and scene changes keep it moving well. You are instantly dropped into the director's lense and kept in that atmosphere. The contrast is sharp; you can imagine what each object feels like. Along with the great folly, it's like you're there.
At some point during the filming a producer should have shut this movie down and taken the loss. No belief in the "new" much smaller and ineffectual Hellboy, and the rest is an awful drive in movie horror show no one wants to watch. Big fan of Big Red, but not this one.
I am a fan of Hellboy. I have read some of the comics and seen all the movies. I would rate this right in the middle as far as the movies were concerned. It was not as good as the Ron Perlman Hellboy movies, but it was better than the 2019 David Harbour movie. It starts off a bit slow, but it starts to pick up speed about halfway through the movie. It is really creepy and a bit strange. It is not like typical Hellboy movies. It was pretty dark, but it was a story about witches. I would not recommend it for children. I liked Jack Kesy's portray of Hellboy and thought Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, and Joseph Marcell were great supporting characters. The acting overall was above average. The CGI was hit or miss. Some were obscenely awful, and some were good. There was decent action. I would have liked to see Hellboy unleashed. There was one cool scene in the church with zombies. Overall, the film is entertaining and interesting and I enjoyed the story, but it was not a fantastic film. It wasn't terrible either. It was right in the middle.
I liked the look of the film, the darkness helped with mood. The file seems to have been shot in chunks with no real cohesiveness. We're on the train, now in the woods, we meet a family, we go to the house, then the church. Overall I enjoyed it, but it made me miss the Ron Perlman version of the hero.
Flawed, sure. It has decent CGI and a disjointed plot. But it's a good horror movie that is a very faithful adaptation of the original short story and a much needed creative improvement from the last Hellboy movie
This movie was way better than expected. Just because the graphics were low budget, doesn’t mean the movie stinks. Loved the raw nature of it.
Starts off good for first 10 mins but then is a weird horror filmed in a odd format. Got bored half way through and ended the film. At no point was it interesting or have me on edge my seat. This is bargain basement material
How in the world is this movie not sitting at a 0% from critics and audiences? The acting, story, casting and CGI were all atrocious. If I hadn’t known better, I would have sworn this was a fan-made movie. It gives off every vibe of a YouTube fan-made short film, that someone turned into a feature length film. The audience score being 53% is why I laugh when people say they listen to audiences over critics. This movie is why I listen to critics far more than audiences. Most people in the world have bad taste. That’s why there are so few trendsetters compared to trend followers. I don’t always agree with critics — after all, they’re still strangers whose taste I don’t know — but they critique every part of a film, and then decide if they believe it has all the hallmarks of a good film. Audiences are far too forgiving of flaws. Most audience reviews boil down to, “I liked it, because it was fun.”
What a giant pile of crap with far too many plot holes it's set 40 years before hellboy was found as a baby but now he's an adult and for some reason they're now witches in it which there never used to be the actor looks and sound and acts nothing like hellboy and the whole thing is too rushed and seemingly made on a shoe string budget biggest pile of crap I have ever regretted watching seriously do not recommend.ps sorry for the lack of punctuation I was too pissed off to use any
I have seen way better hellboy movies this one just didn't make any sense the story line could have been way better
It's a fun, no-frills, B movie horror that knows what it's about and doesn't take itself too seriously. Is the pacing all over the place? Yes. Is the acting Oscar-worthy? Of courst not, but it's mostly serviceable. The special effects? Exactly what you'd expect from a low-budget B movie. Is Jack Kelsey a decent Hellboy? Actually, yes! Surly, laconic, sarcastic - everything you'd expect. Guillermo Del Torro's elusive Hellboy 3, it certainly ain't (but that should come as a surprise to nobody). Is it an improvement on the 2019 Hellboy film? Absolutely (...albeit that's a pretty low bar!). The Crooked Man (the character) lends a decent spooky/creepy factor. At times, I didn't understand much of what was being said - I got the impression there was quite a bit of Hellboy lore that was going over my head. I wouldn't know because I'm not familiar with the comics, but those who are will presumably find these nods and callbacks rewarding. It's a bit of a mess, but also kind of charming because of it. I enjoyed it. And I certainly I found it more memorable than any of the derivitve, dime-a-dozen films that occupy streaming services these days. My advice: if you're a Hellboy fan, give it a chance. Go in with B-movie expectations, and come away pleasantly surprised.
Why does this film exist? Take a bunch of horror movie tropes and shove as many of them as you can into an hour and 40 mins. Throw in A demented version of Sarah Sanderson from Hocus Pocus and a script that would have been better generated by Chat GPT. Add in the girl from the ring, a big spider, spooky people cracking their necks, a wish version of the mask from The Leprechaun for the big bad and you have "Hellboy:The Crooked Man" ...... at least it didn't just turn out to be a dream in the end?
I really cant see why so many folk seem to give this film such a poor rating, compared to may recent films the action is good and the effects are above average. The new actor for Hell Boy does certainly take a while to get used to but in the end I felt that he does a good job. I was never one for hating a film just because it does not seem like the original and I believe that Hell Boy needed to move on and this is one way it can. An absorbing film with a cast that seem to be very into the concept makes this one for me a firm hit.
Wow that has to be ine of the worst movies i have been subjected to and i was force to watch that awful film Captain Marvel. This is just to fragmented. It has no real plot just loats of little stupid mythical characters doing pathetic things. This director needed someone to say no. This will bever be a franchise it makes the other Hellboys look worthy of an oscar
What the hell? This is dreadful. Had to turn it off after 20-25 minutes. All the acting on screen was terrible. Really bad casting.
Sometimes you just have to enjoy the movie! Perfect for anyone looking for a paranormal thriller ! A side quest “just another day” as Hellboy flick! Definitely worth a watch! Jack Kesy makes a killer Hellboy!
