Heretic Reviews

Great acting. Cool story. Specially how Hugh Grant character pokes holes on Christianity. Hugh Grant as a baddie it’s pretty cool and he totally nails it 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿/5 on Max

A great setup that sucks you in. The story gets overly weird, which wasn't really necessary. The problem is how it ends. I don't like it when movies just fade to black, presumably to manipulate audience members into online discussions and debates about what they think happened next. I don't play that game. If I'm going to spend the time to sit through your movie, at least provide a conclusion to your story. The scariest part for me is that I had no idea Topher Grace was in this movie until I saw the credits!

Actors were excellent. Hugh Grant definitely showed his acting ability. The female actors absolutely nailed the submissive and trusting part - reminded me of growing up as a missionary kid - giving into beliefs that forsake, yet save, in the end.

Pseudo -intellectual and fake.

I honestly expected it to be better. It was intriguing enough to watch all the way through but was rather bland and somewhat stereotypical. I wouldn't say it was terrible, it just never felt like it had that WOW factor.

How in the hell did this film get such good reviews? It was boring, long, and nonsense. Some people may like the looonnngggg drawn out religious thoughts, but imo skip this garbage.

so suspenseful. Hugh Grant is amazing and i think anything Sophie Thatcher touches turns to gold

First: why is the label “COMEDY” not attached to what eventually turns into hopeless drivel? I always hated the Hugh Grant rom-coms I was dragged to when dating many years ago, so it was a pleasant surprise to actually see him in a role in which he is designed to be hated, and he does a wonderful job of it. As many people have observed we get off to a good start, with Grant posing intellectual challenges to two raw CLDS missionary recruits. I especially enjoyed the presentations of the world’s largest religions as parallels to the history of a famous board game. (Confession: I am an atheist.) Too good to be true: it suddenly veers away from originality to cliché after cliché after cliché, each one more predictable and each leaving another hole in what passes for a plot. I can’t imagine for what audience this was made: the first half is way too talky and nicely smarmy for horror/gore fans; the second half quickly alienates anyone who enjoys films which linger in their minds. (Confession: I saw "The Brutalist" four times in the cinema.)

I think the way the concept of control was conveyed in the movie was awesome. I thought it was a cool mind game aswell with the main guy going a great job. I think the story line lacked and it was slow in some areas. Decent otherwise.

Oddly enough, Heretic will require patience and concentration on your part, and if you give it that, your experience will become even more fascinating and surprisingly lovable.

Que buena película!

This is an absolute recommendation to see if somewhat curious about religion. No disappointment here.

Main female lead was unbearable to watch move at a snail's pace. I do not recommend watching this movie unless you want to raise you're blood pressure. Especially that scene where should could have just ended the guy while her friend was distracting. Also the butterfly at the end don't make no sense. Also, how did the other female lead get her arm cut up with no blood coming out and survive her injuries for like 30 minutes? Is this all a dumbahh hallucination? Definitely do not recommend to watch.

The movie is incredibly well made—the pacing, the music, the overall flow—it all comes together beautifully. From the perspective of someone who served a mission, it feels remarkably accurate. The anxiety portrayed on screen is tangible; you can truly feel what the characters are experiencing. The religious arguments are thoughtfully crafted—enough to shake the confidence of a casual believer. The film challenges the idea of a transactional God, where prayers are expected to be answered a certain way and miracles are granted on demand. However, it falls short in portraying a deeper truth: that pure faith transcends those simplistic expectations. A testimony born of the Spirit cannot be fully grasped or unraveled through logic alone. It isn’t just a human feeling—it is divine. Incomprehensible to anyone trying to understand it by any means other than faith. Because of that, it cannot be reduced to an intellectual exercise or a philosophical argument

Scary, Suspenseful and a great ride. The acting is spectacular. I was able to put my shoulders down when it was over.

Smart and poignant, the product of A24's tight grasp on the meta-horror sub genre. Incredibly casted and deftly executed, a real gem of the silver screen. Even if you're not a usual fan of the horror/thriller genre, this one might float your boat... 8.6/10.

It felt like piecing together a puzzle!

I watched Heretic without having high expectations, but I also didn’t think it would be a complete flop—and it wasn’t. What stood out most to me was how unpredictable the story was. The film set up scenes in a way that made you think you knew what would happen next, only to take the plot in a different direction. By avoiding clichés, it kept me engaged and curious about what was coming. I give a lot of credit to suspenseful movies that don’t follow a predictable formula, and in that sense, this film delivered. That said, it wasn’t a standout movie overall and started to lose some of its strength toward the end. Still, it was a solid and enjoyable watch.

Happy I didn't spend money to watch it in a theatre. My first instinct was that it would just be another weird horror movie. I was half right. Enjoyed the first half but the minute they went downstairs it was over for me. As weird as I expected it to be then.
