Holy Motors Reviews

If characters and plot are important ingredients for you, then you’ll probably start checking out before the halfway mark.

Episode 34: Relaxer / A Scanner Darkly / The Beach Bum / Holy Motors

| Original Score: 94/100 | Sep 14, 2021

This is what dream-logic looks like. Holy Motors comes about as close to making me actually feel like I was inside of a dream in anything since Inland Empire.

| Original Score: A | Jul 6, 2021

I'm pretty sure I won't see anything more audacious this year than Leos Carax's self reflexive, funny, goofy and touching ode to cinema.

The film is a stylistic snake, wriggling from one cinematic mode to the next through a loose cannon series of utterly unpredictable sequences which all feature the auteur's brilliant, amorphous stand-in, Denis Lavant.

'Holy Motors' wants to stamp, more than a message, a metaphor about human nature. [Full review in Spanish]

An ideal show. [Full review in Spanish]

This is one of those films whose calculated eccentricity doesn't prevent constant amazement, the feeling of rediscovering cinema scene after scene. [Full review in Spanish]

The film does not go to waste when Carax gets too carried away. [Full review in Spanish]

A sampling of the pleasures of cinema, with each encounter touching on a different genre - sci-fi, fantasy, crime, melodrama, musical (yes, Kylie sings!). Quite how deep it really is remains moot, but it's a stylish exercise in existential tristesse.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Apr 29, 2020

A fascinating film.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Apr 29, 2020

You'll either run with it or you won't, but you can be sure you've never seen anything quite like it.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Apr 29, 2020

It takes a lot to put yourself completely in a director's hands during a movie like this, but doing so makes Holy Motors deeply rewarding if you hang in with it and let Carax guide you.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Apr 29, 2020

Sadly it appears Holy Motors' core audience is something of a niche that does not include any who haven't yet sold their entire soul to the art de cinéma.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Apr 29, 2020

I had a hard time finding much of a concrete message within it all as much as a saw a director experimenting to various degrees of success and presenting a film that isn't really a film at all.

| Original Score: C | Apr 29, 2020

Writer/Director Leos Carax has created a truly one of a kind masterpiece.

| Original Score: 9/10 | Apr 29, 2020

For lovers of cinema Holy Motors is probably a must-see, but in sad clown cinema as sporadic and strange as this, even a rock solid recommendation seems to be slippery territory.

Holy Motors is not only the most eccentric film at this year's Cannes Film Festival, it's also one of the best.

| Original Score: B+ | Apr 29, 2020

The film answers nothing and leaves all of its balls wonderfully suspended in the air.

| Apr 29, 2020

Such a wild, weird and joyful film that I wouldn't have been surprised if fireworks started going off in the theater 3/4 of the way into the film. It's that kind of experience.
