Hook Reviews
I saw this movie at the theater (as an adult) on opening weekend when it first came out. I’m a fan of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan story. I’m a fan of Steven Spielberg as a filmmaker. I’m a fan of Robin Williams as an entertainer (and Dustin Hofmann too). So I was expecting greatness! And, despite Whst most critics said at the time, I believe I got it. I love the idea of Peter Pan growing up and forgetting his fantasy past. But then, through a series of events has to return to Neverland. It’s an interesting new take on an old story. And, oh my gawd, the sets on this film are absolutely awe inspiring. That’s because they’re not CGI, they’re real! Hook may be one of the last films to use actual real sets rather than just green-screening everything. And real just looks more magical, in my opinion. Now let’s talk about Dustin Hoffman. Is he not the absolute best Captain Hook there ever was? And there’s been a LOT of great Captain Hooks (e.g., Jason Isaacs I the 2003 Peter Pan). Bob Hoskins was incredible as Mr. Smee too. I stopped watching Hook after Robin Williams died because it just made me cry throughout it. But after enough time had passed, I finally could watch it again. And I’m reminded that it’s a masterpiece (despite what critics think). I wouldn’t change a thing*. *Well, I’d love to see a restored 4K version of Hook with the songs included, as it stated out being a musical (or, so I’ve heard).
This is a great film. I have no idea why the "critics" gave it such a low score. Robin Williams is a genius, a legend, and the greatest Peter Pan to ever appear in the big screen!
I genuinely am so baffled by the low rating. This is truly one of the greatest childhood movies, I just introduced my 4&5 yr old to this movie this evening and they were engrossed from the second it started. I even cried a few times with pure happiness for the memories it brought back
No idea how this could've been rated 29%. This defined my childhood. I was completely enthralled by this movie. I watched it for the first time in 25 years this past weekend and it was just as perfect as it was then.
Hook is a masterpiece of film. There is nothing more to say. It’s perfect.
I don't know why this has such a low rating from the critics. But this movie is one of the top ten movies of all time in my life. It is extremely nostalgic for me.I can easily watch this once a year and love it every time. Robin williams in his peak .. JOHN williams (need i say more?) and i love it. Great job Steven Spielberg seriously. Don't listen to the naysayers.
One of my favorite peter pan.
This film lacks in many factors. First of all the story is so generic and bland, the characters in this film are tedious and boring and the acting isn't great either, the visuals are terrible and i can barely make anything out in this movie, the audio feels like its going to pierce my ears and the final ending was so bad and stupid it really felt like the entire threat the whole time was just a measly side quest. Overall it was not a good movie and I strongly recommend not watching it.
Still one of the greats. Loved it at 8 when I saw it in theaters and still love it now at 41. Just shows critics know absolutely nothing.
It looked nice but I thought it felt like Robin William's did not want be there as his acting was definitely not in it. I don't no why his timing was delayed several times in reacting to other actors and it blew the scenes. They tried way too hard every thing was way over the top and very silly, I had high but was very disappointed. TJK
This movie is perfect and I don't understand how so many people dislike it. Thankfully, the lowest scores seem to mainly have come from professional film critics whom most of us understand are so nitpick-y that they've lost the ability to just enjoy movies.
One of my favorite movies and in my opinion, a perfect film. Comedy, drama, heartbreak, family, loyalty, love, action and the best part, the score.
I watched this at the cinema as a kid and I swear, it only gets better with age. Dustin Hoffman as Hook is incredible. Yes it’s a silly Spielberg kids film but doesn’t every adult need the occasional cheesy, overly emotional silly escapade?
This movie is incredibly charming. As a child it completely unlocked my imagination. As an adult I admire the performances, the sets and the music. Share it with children or sit back and relish the nostalgia. I cannot fathom why critics couldn't leave their high brows at home and become wrapped up in the enchantment.
It only deserves 5 stars.
I love this film. It's funny, has a lot of heart and the sets are incredible. You really feel transported to a magical fantasy land. It's another Robin Williams film that makes me miss his comedic talent and underrated acting skills. Dustin Hoffman as Hook is one of my all-time favourite villains. And look out for Glenn Close as the pirate who gets put in the Boo Box.
In spite of the misleading title, this movie presents an interesting possibility for the charcter of Peter Pan who forgot his origin and tries to find it.
I will never understand why critics hate this
