The first third of the story then presents [the protagonist] like a typical Hitchcock ingenue before branching out into a promisingly ambitious mystery. Too bad that story ultimately loses focus and its protagonist's point of view.

I did find myself wishing that all films this narratively misguided were so directorially sure-footed. Makes getting through them a lot less painful.

Ms. Dormer and the cast remain dedicated to the story, and that helps the audience do the same. Still, even if you don't entirely agree with where they've taken you, the ride alone is worth your time.
