Irréversible Reviews

Noé is a director who understands how to cojur up a reaction from the audience, and he understands the power of film. His films aren't always the easiest or the most enjoyable to watch, but I can appreciate the work that has gone into creating them.

Noé, with a disruptive aesthetic, evokes explicit images to point out a text about the irreversibility of time and moral actions, but whose narrative often frequents places that lose the pulse in its model of urban transgression. [Full review in Spanish]

As Irréversible works its way back to the beginning, the frame stabilises. But this proves illusory, forcing viewers to witness with harrowing clarity a descent into another underworld...

An important film which pushes past exploitation cinema to become something altogether more profound. There’s no closure, no answers, and only an uneasy happiness about to come apart at the seams.

The story barely contains a plot, but "Irréversible" made its name on its visceral imagery and disorientation.

One of the most provocative, controversial movies of the 21st century.

A pirouetting monster of angst.

| Original Score: 84/100 | Aug 22, 2021

A brutal exercise in form that need not be ignored. Noé is a modern auteur, no matter what you think of his ideas.

It is telling that No, a filmmaker ordinarily enamored by the grueling underbelly of human behavior, can effectively contrast the nihilism of the climactic events with an almost hopeful tone overlaying the story's origins.

No weaves together the off-putting elements into something that sears itself permanently in the memory.

Contains crippling, extended acts of sexual violence and general inhumanity, yet, under the bleeding rawness of it all, was a film of brilliant technical achievement and unrivaled, unrelenting ferocity.

The lurid gimmick of a barking sideshow host.

Noe is a confrontational master, no question.

| Original Score: A | Sep 24, 2007

The film is almost unwatchable at the beginning, but the chaos and horror of the swinging camera stabilizes, the film becomes more structured and horrifying long after the cinematic devices calm down.

Me? I'm going to go watch "The Brady Bunch" to wash these images out of mind. And, I'm going to withstand the fury of those who decide I'm a squeamish wimp.
