Irréversible Reviews
Shocking. Brutal. Disturbing. Original. Sickening. Brilliant. You will never get this film out of your head!
Disturbing but brilliantly crafted film
Well shot and crafted film
So I guess I’m watching Gaspar Noé’s filmography out of order. I watched Enter the Void recently and really enjoyed it. If you don’t know, Irréversible was the film he directed immediately prior. To put it frankly, it’s clear that he was still honing his ideas at this point. While Enter the Void feels intentional, meaningful, and tight (despite its intimidating runtime), Irréversible feels awkward, gratuitous, and laborious (even though it’s just over 90 minutes long). There are a few scenes that are particularly effective (if you’ve seen the film, you know the ones), but a lot of it is just filler. And there’s definitely some meaning that can be extracted if you squint hard enough, but it really feels more like a director throwing slurs and violence at a wall for shock-value, just to see what sticks. The directing isn’t bad, but it’s misused, unfocused, and unpolished. Lastly, the non-linear storytelling doesn’t do this film any favors. What starts as an intense endeavor ends with a whimper. And to be totally clear, I get what he’s trying to represent with this, but it just doesn’t make for an effective viewing experience.
What was the aim here? To shake a camera for 30 minutes in circles until the viewer grumbled in frustration at what is possibly a 3 year old at the cameras helm? Please, show us what the hell is going on. Dark, Light, Mid, Dark, Light, Pick a mood already. 35 minutes of film to finally stabilize the view point. If Monica Bulluci wasn't so hot, this film would never have gotten off the start line.
One of the two worst movies I've ever seen. It is the definitive example of the phrase "gratuitous violence." Noe seems to be in love with shock value and lacks any substantive ideas to back it up. A truly repulsive and unnecessary film.
My friend Adam from FAMSU recommended it and now I'm not even sure why since I struggled through it and even had fast forwarded it to get through. I'm sure I ended up missing some of the plot in the latter half. I never want to see it again and shouldn't have bothered. SLC DVD.
This film delivers on its intense reputation, offering a gripping and brutal experience. However, the overly ambitious camera work detracts from the overall quality. The cinematography feels chaotic, as if shot by someone casually tossing around an iPhone. Unfortunately, the editing seems to embrace this erratic style, treating it as visionary rather than refining it for clarity and impact. While the film succeeds in many ways, the disorienting visuals may leave some viewers frustrated.
No es mala, pero pues es Gaspar Noe de ahuevo es incómodo y difícil de ver
Supper movie clips is supper
Extraordinary screenplay, haunting music, powerful performances from the lead actors makes this movie so disturbing. 8.2/10
Unnecessary watch. There is no reason to watch this pretentious and way over-the-top movie. Noe has a strange obsession with sex and violence...
Avoid this movie at all cost, unless you are a cinephile specially if you appreciate non commercial cinema. This movie is in the "forbidden zone." Gasper Noe always goes beyond the limit in forbidden zone and make artistic about it. The cinematography actually adds to the realism created by the actors. Also if you Monica Bellucci is your crush, you'll probably sue Gasper Noe.
Uncomfortable, tough, harsh, chaotic, graphic
This movie satisfies everything I want in the depraved horror movie genre. A brutal torturous sequence, a frenzied revenge tour, the right amount of gore and violence, while not straying from the plot. At times I felt like I was watching an underground thriller, then a depraved horror, then even a love story. Taking from the playbook of Clockwork Orange and Memento, I was thoroughly entertained.
The film's infamous opening scene is a gut punch, a necessary descent into the depths of human cruelty. Noé doesn't shy away from graphic violence, forcing viewers to confront the darkness that lurks within. However, Irreversible is more than just shock value. It's a masterfully crafted puzzle that unfolds backwards, demanding active engagement from the audience to piece together the shattered fragments of Alex (Monica Bellucci) and Marcus's (Vincent Cassel) lives.
Maybe Noe's backwards narrative was meant to be some kind of attempt to comment on the pointlessness of violence, but I couldn't care less. It doesn't change the fact that this is a thoroughly pretentious and disgusting film. Even if this is deranged commentary of some kind, the final product is so thoroughly unwatchable that it undermines itself. Whatever, that's probably what Noe wanted.
Gaspar Noé always creating works of art.
