Juice Reviews
Juice is a solid film that met it's brief through with memorable performances. However, fleshing out the context in which motivated characters would have transcended the film.

Juice teases the potential to deeply explore serious themes but falls short. While promising, the abrupt shifts in character development, particularly Bishop's, leaves one emotionally disconnected. It misses some opportunities but remains a decent watch.

Juice is the most mature and provocative meditation on black street life to date. With Juice, Dickerson makes an impressive directorial debut.

...a rough-around-the-edges yet periodically spellbinding drama...
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 23, 2022
Well-directed with a 'just-so' exaggeration to it that works for the movie. Excellent Special Edition 4K from Paramount Home Entertainment.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 18, 2022
The picture morphs from a candid look at urban life into a preposterous pulp thriller.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jan 15, 2022
Juice is part coming-of-age story and part heavy-handed but effective social message. It's also part psychological profile -- as Bishop grows increasingly psychopathic -- and just plain scary.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 17, 2021
A volatile and bold crime drama with a genuine heart and excellent performances.

Juice adapts the DJ-struggling-to- make-it scenario to put across a mesage of inner-city hopelessness...the most interesting elements are the all too brief glimpses of family life and the boys' own relationships.

Juice captures the traumatic and anxious roots of American gangsterism better than just about any other entry in the evergreen genre.
| May 31, 2019
One of the more interesting aspects of Juice is that all the characters are morally ambiguous which can be unsettling for some viewers.
| Mar 4, 2019
It is genuinely slickly made and often deliberately amusing.

Despite good performances from the young leads, this tale of crime and punishment lacks the sharp detail and deep reality of John Singleton's view of growing up in the Los Angeles ghetto. Nor is there much in "Juice."
| Apr 13, 2018
Poised halfway between the action conventions of New Jack City and the personal grit of Straight Out of Brooklyn, Juice doesn't have the pizzaz or the insight, to satisfy as either exploitation or art.
| Feb 7, 2018
An above-average story of four "boys in the hood."
| Mar 27, 2009
Dickerson and co-writer Gerard Brown exhibit a sharp ear for dialog and have some real finds in their largely unknown cast...
| Mar 26, 2009
Stylishly shot, it works well as a thriller; the result is energetic and entertaining, without the feeling of difficult truths being forgotten.
