Julie & Julia Reviews

Jan 19, 2025

It’s charming, but hard to ignore how Adams’ Julie feels flat next to Streep’s effortlessly captivating Julia.

Have wached it many times, and find it entertaining and comforting. I've lived in France, and enjoy the language. And culinary "ways". Don't give it 5 stars though, because it's a bit toothless. But I'll probably keep rewatching it, and have many more delightful times. Bon appétit!

My top comfort films

Em alguns momentos o filme é cansativo, mas sempre compensa esperar as cenas onde a Maryl Streep interpreta a Julia Child.

Absolutely pleasant

This was like watching 2 different movies at one time and they never seemed to connect. I didn't like Meryl Streep's performance, her voice started to bother me as it went on. It seemed phony. I found the Amy Adams story to be more interesting but I didn't fully understand why she was cooking and blogging. Also working a full time job and living in a sad apartment where it seemed that she wouldn't be able to afford this experiment in the first place. I didn't understand the temporary break up at the end at all. The food definitely should have been highlighted more especially from the Julia Child side. Overall I didn't hate this movie, it was just extremely disjointed. Pick a story and tell it to the fullest please.

This is one of my very favorite comedies of the 2000s and one of my top Meryl Streep performances ever - which is saying an awful lot. I can't recall ever seeing a performance filled with such joy and joie de vivre - she is absolutely luminous, and her spirit practically jumps off of the screen. Many complained that the Julie part doesn't work, and while certainly not as involving or resonant as Julia, it still contains many wonderful moments. Stanley Tucci is magnificent as Child's husband and deserved a lot more attention and respect than he got. Directed by the late Nora Ephron, this will always remain to me her crowning achievement.

I think this is my 2nd favourite Meryl Streep movie. Amy Adams and Meryl Streep shine in the main roles. The story makes you laugh and makes you want to get in the kitchen and cook. "...and let me say this: is there anything better than butter? Think it over: every time you taste something that's delicious beyond imagining and you say, "What is in this?", the answer is always going to be, Butter. The day there's a meteorite heading toward the earth and we have thirty days to live, I am going to spend it eating butter. Here's my final words on the subject, you can never have too much, butter."

Streep is radiant and a perfect counterpart to Adam's grounded take on the mundane modern life. This film is overflowing with charm. It finds joy in the everyday things with unexpected relevance. I expected to dislike this movie, but after watching it, Julie and Julia holds a special place in my heart.

Her voice gave me a headache and the movie was horrible, boring, and bland.

A real feel good film with excellent acting and a very easy watch.

Despite the great acting from Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Stanley Tucci and others, this is just not a great movie. And it doesn't really hold up over time.

In my life I have two main hobbies that I am passionate about, film and cooking. As someone who would rather be in the kitchen than almost anywhere else, this film spoke to me in a real way. I was able to connect with both Julie and Julia as they navigated their lives while finding peace and comfort in food. Meryl Streep's performance was effortless as she transformed into a woman metaphorically (and physically) larger than life. Seeing her journey to become one of the most recognizable faces in the history of food was a joy to watch. On the other side, you meet a relatable woman struggling to find her own identity in Julie Powell. Both stories were enchanting and I enjoyed seeing their individual love stories come together. While there was never a big moment, a shocking revelation or an unexpected twist, Julie & Julia painted a beautiful picture of life, love and cooking.

Dull, drawn-out story with two plots, neither of which contain any drama. Eg, when Julie's husband finally erupts in anger at her narcissistic blogging adventure, he leaves for a day, then, without our seeing any of his or Julia's struggles--other than her tears--he simply returns. The whole big, ugly issue of his disdain of his wife's adventure disappears as if it never happened. Julia Child's story is nothing more than illustration, not drama. Every challenge she faces quickly resolves.

It was a great movie and inspirational.

Wonderfully charming comedy cooked with much love and morals. Lovely performance by the sweet casts, tastefully scripted in one wholesome package.

Cute story about a blogger named Julie who is inspired by the chef Julia Childs and sets out to cook all of the recipes from her book in a year. In the end, Julia didn't approve of her blog, but Julie still landed a book deal that was turned into this movie. Unfortunate that Julie died so young in real life recently, at 49 years old.

A lightweight comedy/drama that is entertaining due to a great script and fine acting by Streep, Adams and Tucci. The only off note for me was the performance of Chris Messina as Julie Powell's (Amy Adam's) husband. He is not an actor that creates empathy and does not convince as the supportive husband he portrays. There is a lot of eating in the film and in a couple of scenes his table manners are uncouth, and these scenes are off putting. Aside from that this is a well-written, well-acted and well-crafted film that constantly engages and amuses.

Meryl Streep is great as Julia Childs and she makes the film enjoyable to watch. Amy Adam's is also good but her side of the story is abit boring and doesn't hold up to Julia's.
