King of Thieves Reviews
Suspensful and nuanced. Interesting.
Passes the time but little else. Tries hard to be both a comedy and a thriller but doesn't really succeed at either. For such a daring burglary, this could have surely been done a lot better.
Fun veteran cast makes this an entertaining enough watch
Not sure about all the hate on this film. Yes, the actors swear too much, and it's unnecessary. But cockney villains DO swear a lot (as my east-end wife would testify). You get the feeling that the actors all enjoyed playing their parts - perhaps more than the audience did getting to watching it. It's certainly not great. It didn't really test the brain too much. But for a couple of hours of harmless fun, closely based on a true story I thought it was OK.
The performances are enough to watch this movie. There seems to be a disconnect between scenes that can make everything a little difficult to follow the story line.
What's not to like? A great cast, reflecting the true story of an old, "gang who couldn't shoot straight", jewel heist, that disintegrates into chaos. I could watch Caine and crew work all day long. Beats hell out of what passes for most "modern" crime flix. Good stuff. Makes me want to go back and watch the original *1968*, 'The Italian Job'. :'D
What could have been a fascinating study into the relationships between a longstanding band of criminals descended into continuous swearing with little meaningful dialogue. A few stand out performances but surprisingly Michael Caine was not one of them.
It could have been worse, but the writing wasn't funny, exciting, or realistic. I don't know the details of the real event, but it seems ridiculous that they'd sit in pubs and loudly discuss the fact they had robbed a bank. Their lack of awareness for CC온라인카지노추천 was painful to watch as well. Then there was the fact that none of the characters were likeable and spent the entire film engaged in a swearing contest. On the other hand, the cast was excellent, and the acting was reasonable. The cinematography, visual effects, and soundtrack were all decent. The writing and pacing let it down. It tried to be more of a comedy than an authentic crime story and ended up failing on both accounts.
A great cast and a good old heist - what's not to enjoy? I remember hearing about the Hatton Garden stuff when it happened and subsequently saw the television miniseries on I온라인카지노추천 in 2019. That aforementioned show is very good, as is this 2018 film. It's a pretty simple film to make and act, hence why there are three films about this premise out there. However, that doesn't stop it being entertaining to see unfold. The casting is obvious but, again, suits the production's needs perfectly. Michael Caine (Brian), Jim Broadbent (Terry), Charlie Cox (Basil), Michael Gambon (Billy) and Ray Winstone (Danny) all feature. Caine and Cox give the more memorable performances, but they all act well enough. I like how the film portrays all of the criminals as criminals, none of them are good people and aren't shown as such. I also rate the humour, which is minor but nevertheless amusing in most parts. There's a few other little things that I appreciated, including the archive footage edit of the main group. Each to their own, but I enjoyed 'King of Thieves'.
Egad look what just broke into our screens! A gang of over the hill jewel thieves plan and execute one of Britain's biggest ever heists. This gang of misfit nasty ole robbers all seem to have been hauled out of their comfortable retirement homes, kicking and screaming, while constantly uttering an endless barrage of foul expletives - each trying to needlessly out swear the other. The only audiences likely to make it through this caper will be those hauled out of their graves, propped up in their seats with match sticks placed under their eyelids... much like this rusty ole gang. While supposedly based on fact, its mostly presented as a comedy caper (the scriptwriter even foolishly makes a reference to the classic ‘Lavender Hill Mob") but then throws up sharp, jarring moments of hateful double-crosses, tipping this take of events off balance. One or two moments work but not nearly enough to keep us engaged till the somewhat cop out finale. This looks like someone put the plots of multiple other heist movies on a table and invited a group of daft executive producers to pick the scenes they wanted to finance. Perhaps only the performers got to laugh all the way to the bank (or did they?)
Based on a real account of a robbery in London and featuring a superb all British cast. Very much like the botched heist, the plot here is a shambles all over the place.
Story moved along too slowly with excessive dialogue.
There's some real, small pleasure in watching these old lions at work...
King of Thieves is the true story of the Hatton Garden Heist about a group of retired crooks who pulled off a jewelry heist in 2015. It was a perfectly planned robbery but due to tensions and rivalries between the gang members the plan eventually fell apart and the police caught up to all but one of the members. I was really looking forward to the film, the cast is absolutely spot on and many of the film's flaws aren't really down to the cast who in my opinion did the best with what they had. The flaws are due to pacing in the first half of the film which is all over the place, poorly placed jokes and an absolutely horrendous jazz fueled soundtrack which plays over much of the action on screen and distracts from the enjoyment of the film. Whoever was in charge of sound should have been fired. With a few tweaks this could have been so much better, it was a missed opportunity.
Took my mother to see this movie in a senior citizens community with closed captions, so the audience was predisposed to like it. However, I liked it, too. If you watch it at home turn on the close captions, The dialogue is fast with many British slang terms and heavy accents. No doubt some of the critics missed a lot of the dialogue. The old pros playing the leads are outstanding, especially Michael Caine and Jim Broadbent. The point is that these tough men may be old and have various physical ailments, but they are still the criminal sons of bitches that they always were. Jealousies and egos remain intact, and it takes no time at all for them to turn on each other. We could have used more backstory on the players, which would have explained some of the resentments that come to light. And the one young crook who plays a critical role still remains a mystery by the end of the story. Flashbacks featuring younger versions of the actors are fascinating, and go by way too quickly. The movie would have been fun if we could’ve seen more of that. There’s something about the look of the film that isn’t polished, and gives it a low-budget kind of feeling. There is a lot of set -up that could have been done better, but once things fall apart and the law is on their tail, the film gets downright exciting. And the text at the end, explaining what happened to the real characters, is always a nice wrap up to a movie based on a true story. Definitely worth watching at home with the closed captions catching all the British insults and funny bits.
Run of the mill heist movie, for all its cast its not very good. The jokes are funny at first then quickly become old.
Between 2.5 and 3. The story is interesting, but there are certain moments when action and plot decay and make it boring or unbearable. But, in general, you can watch it.
