Kingdom Come Reviews

This story about relatives who set about annoying each other at a funeral has some heartfelt emotion, but it clashes spectacularly with unseemly gross-out humor.

A heavyset daughter who never talks but eats a lot is named Delightful, which is supposed to be funny. That pretty much sums up the movie's comic tone.

While Kingdom Come follows the formula for comic combustibility, it's even more inert than Bud, who at least comes to life for a brief fantasy sequence.

The structure and style are a staple of many traveling black stage shows ... What slays them in the second balcony, though, flattens on the screen.

A mediocre sitcom writ large.

Manages to be profound without being pompous.

Despite an appealing cast that includes Toni Braxton and Cedric The Entertainer, Kingdom Come won't leave you with a happy feeling -- and it may just leave you feeling surly.

Sometimes there's nothing to be done about death except laugh at it, which is exactly what the comedy Kingdom Come does, with most of the right laughs in most of the right places and some unexpected ones thrown in.

A lukewarm African-American sitcom that forsakes the laugh track in favor of an R&B soundtrack.

Because they are of a piece, the movie's farcical and sentimental excesses work together.

This is so amateurish that the cast members, whose characters are all supposed to come from the same little Southern town, don't even bother to adjust their wildly differing accents.

As well done as this film is in places, though, it's hard to be forgiving amid diarrhea jokes, hectoring, high-strung drama queens and heavy-set ladies swinging purses.

There's not much this gifted cast can do with the Bottrell-Jones script.

A hit and miss proposition, with an abundance of laughs and emotional highlights to help brighten the dimly lit corners of cliche-mongering.

Kingdom Come has passably funny moments, but they don't connect; it might work on video for viewers who glance up at the screen from time to time. The more attention you pay to it, the less it's there.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 11, 2001

Kingdom Come makes it on heart, not flash.

Demands high tolerance for low comedy.

| Apr 10, 2001

A grab-bag of loosely connected scenes and lives than a film with a firm sense of direction.
