Kingdom Come Reviews
I tried to muster up a liking for this movie from the very beginning and just could not do it. The movie went out of its way to characterize Loretta & Jada's roles as absolute harpies, nagging their male counterparts for several minutes of screentime each as their way of starting the movie off and literally attempted to portray Jada's husband's murderous response as a joke, only to then have her continue in this vein literally the entire movie - it seemed they thought that her ultimately being correct about him cheating on her was her redemptive character arc, but it just did not work that way for me. The interactions between LL & Anthony's characters brought the movie way too far in the other extreme, which if I could forget that it's supposed to be a comedy could've made it a good movie, particularly LL's struggle with alcoholism & the non-funny matronly turn from Whoopi. The movie focused what felt like half of its screen time on Jada's character being just atrocious in every way, even splashing the well-meaning Anthony in the face in the middle of the funeral, then expected her forgiving him in the last 3 minutes of the movie to be a tidy ending. Not even the music, usually a highlight in black fold comedies, was of any note as it was all gospel music written mostly by the same guy.
If you're looking for a well written film with meaning and that has a great plot than I suggest you bypass this film. However, if you're lookig for a movie "just for laughs", I just suggest you watch Kingdom Come. I can watch this movie over and over and still fall out of my seat from laughing so hard! Great pick-me-upper!
I was just in Dearly Departed, the play this movie is based on. I really in enjoyed the movie, it mostly goes by the play but there are a few parts added and taken away. Great cast in the movie.
There's something about "funeral" movies that brings out the most interesting characters. This one has a very good cast of actors with Whoopi Goldberg playing a surprisingly understated role, It has all the usual family clashes and scandals but it's heart's in the right place.
I love this movie. I know most of Jada Pinkett-Smith's parts. The morning after my dad's passing Anthony Anderson's line kept running through my mind, "Shut it up, just shut it up. My daddy just died, my daddy just died! Ooooo, you say one more thing about parking lots....."
I only saw the tail-end of this movie, but it seemed really heart-felt and had an amazingly star-studded cast. Seems like one of those that tries too hard to be funny, however.
Man this movie was so down to earth and real. I loved the small town - big dream theme in this movie that seemed to let us know that we are no greater than the next person and that we should respect life and the people GOD put in our lives no matter how "Mean & Surly" they are. Ain't that right Brother Bud?
I absolutely LOVE this movie! Great ensemble cast; all these talented and well-known people exercising their comedic bones and bringing about great results!
Based on their play "Dearly Departed", the writers adapt the stage piece for screen fairly successfully. If one is familiar at all with the aforementioned, then they'll easily pick out specific scenes (as they are practically verbatim). The cast is funny overall, however I feel the script would have benefitted from tighter editing. While the film is very much a faithful translation, somehow it lacks in that it is just that. The screen version is deserving of more than the play script provides; and so does it's cast.
