Mack & Rita Reviews
Occasionally funny scenarios and stereotypical remarks about men (the film barely passes the bechdel test) that paradoxically simplify the themes at Mack & Rita‘s core, making it have less of an impact by the time it reaches its inevitable happy ending.

Mack & Rita is a film you’ve seen before. Sure, the plot and the characters are varied slightly, but there’s nothing new or different here. There are six montages in the meager 95-minute runtime, and that alone demonstrates how surface-level the script is

"Mack & Rita" is the third directorial outing from actress Katie Aselton, who showed a sharp eye for tension with her 2012 thriller "Black Rock," but can't quite give new life to a body swap comedy.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Jul 16, 2023
The movie flirts with absurdist satire, identity crises, irony, ideas about aging and ageism, May-December rom-com tropes, magical realism, fish-out-of-water comedy and a bunch of other stuff, without fully committing to any of it.

...a seemingly foolproof premise that is, by and large, employed to mediocre and disappointing effect by Aselton...

Rita feels less exciting than online Diane Keaton. Yes, the actress has great fun in the role attending influencer events throughout the movie. But none of the set pieces feel outlandish or inspired enough to be more fun than Keaton’s own personal feed.
| Original Score: C+ | Nov 28, 2022
Keaton is perfectly capable of selling the idea of a discombobulated 30-year old in a septuagenarian's body, which helps when you're dealing with a script that occasionally (okay, often) forces her into embarrassing slapstick.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 16, 2022
Fortunately, Mack & Rita is playing at a movie theater that serves alcohol.

Keaton is the best part of the lackluster comedy that relies on sentimentality instead of laughs
| Original Score: 2/4 | Sep 5, 2022
A situation that induces more head-shaking confusion than laughs, the Mack & Rita movie lacks a workable premise.

A film like this with an equal mix of quirky humour and drama is tailormade for Keaton. Despite the flaws in the film, she is a joy to watch up on the screen.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 25, 2022
“Mack and Rita” undervalues one generation (when did 70 become ancient?) and overvalues another. The whole influencer career is oversold and the clothes Keaton wears are nothing more than variations on her own wardrobe.
| Original Score: 0/4 | Aug 25, 2022
You not only get Diane Keaton in all her quirky glory, but you also get a fabulous wardrobe to dazzle any budding costume designer living in your house. This is a comedy, after all, and the pratfalls come tumbling out from every corner of the screen.

Body swapping flicks may have been produced repeatedly over the decades, but it won't stop audiences from becoming invested in the hope, joy and positivity that comes along with them or what it would be someone else for just a little while.
| Aug 19, 2022
Painfully unfunny and devoid of insight, the magical realism is rushed and sloppy, and the emotional logic never coheres.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Aug 19, 2022
As a comedy, it's OK, but as a ground-breaker, Mack & Rita is exceptional.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 18, 2022
The worst film I’ve seen this year. You may be thinking, “it can’t be that awful.” Yes. Yes it can, and yes it is. There is no way everyone involved in this project didn’t know they had a certified turd on their hands.

I regret to report that it’s an embarrassment all around, despite the talent involved...
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Aug 15, 2022
This movie is fluffy to the point of insipidity, most of the dialogue is feeble, and the idea is thin at feature length, padded out with montage sequences.
| Aug 15, 2022
Mack & Rita is an underwhelming comedy with good intentions that doesn't land despite Keaton’s Herculean efforts to make something of the material.
