Marlowe Reviews
The pace is slow and the dialog is forced. The movie just doesn't click, don't waste your time like this cast was wasted.
This film is a primer for those who've never seen a classic detective movie, a clockwork reproduction of a noir thriller ticking in a glass case so you can see all the moving parts plainly. This makes the exercise too simpleminded for a sophisticated viewer--no surprises and no suspense--but if you are willing to revel in the ageless cliches, timeworn tropes and hoary set pieces in all their over-determined glory, it's engaging and well acted. Looked like the stars were having fun anyway, working with other stars too big for their roles in a sumptuous production with little to do but ham it up for each other.
Got so many twists. Very interesting and entertaining movie 👍👍
In my opinion, I felt that the movie was very good, behind all this, the filmmaker was able to come up with the right festive details to congratulate the members of the behind-the-scenes team.
The cars--such as an early 30s Pierce-Arrow sedan and a yellow, late 30's Packard roadster (shades of Evelyn Mulwray!)--steal the show. Great sets, too. The rest of this wannabe CHINATOWN is a snooze. Not even the superlative cast can save it from a tired plot and some dialogue so trite and routine you'll wonder how the actors managed to mouth their lines without laughing out loud or weeping in despair. Take a miss and re-watch CHINATOWN or LA CONFIDENTIAL, or even THE NICE GUYS or TO DIE FOR.
I loved this movie. I don’t get the low rating.
Love Liam Neeson, period pieces, private dicks, Ellery Queen, Nero Wolf, Poirot, Miss Marple, Midsommer Mysteries, kitsch, in both books and movies ...and I HATED THIS. The dullest piece of twaddle I have ever laid eyes in. What in creation's name were they thinking!!!!?
It’s a crime so many have claimed this movie is boring- a reflection on a world with a short attention span? The performances, direction, design, and screenplay are an absolute delight. It’s voluptuous. Listen to the critics from RogerEbert.com and ignore the others forever. It’s a Marlowe story for adults with Joran’s welcome signature.
It was terrible. It was the most disjointed film. I watched in the last 20 years plot, made no sense, connections were not made kind of a waste of time.
Not a bad Marlowe. Should Liam try to be Bogart? There was an aside to the Maltese Falcon. Nice plot twists, self absorbed nefarious characters, and rich people getting away without consequences.
Am a big Liam fan so would watch him in about anything--But this film tries valiantly to capture the aura of the time and the costumes and scenery along with competent acting made it a fun film to watch.
This film, despite featuring Liam Neeson in a classic action movie setup, falls short in terms of pacing and inspiration. The slow and tedious nature of the film led to moments of boredom, prompting viewers to fast-forward through uninteresting segments, only to find the overall writing and execution lacking in quality. As a result, the movie failed to deliver a compelling and engaging experience. Liam Neeson's performances can be hit or miss, with his roles often varying in quality and impact. In this particular film, the outdated and sluggish pace added to the overall disappointment, leaving viewers questioning the purpose and appeal of the movie. The lackluster execution and uninspiring storyline contributed to the overall negative perception of the film, making it difficult to understand its creation and viewing appeal.
I just couldn’t get into watching this film.
This film was so slow at first, that my wife couldn't take it after about 30 minutes, and she, like me is a Neeson fan. However I finished it off later alone, and I was rewarded with my patience. Not to say it's the best effort in this genre, but I can say I finished it with some satisfaction. Neeson is of an age where his portrayal of Chandler's Marlowe is effective enough. The depiction of 1940 Hollywood (even though it's filmed in Spain believe it ir not) and the great period costuming is impressive. The script is less so. If you demand the gripping rock'em sock'em big budget action film, do not waste your time. But if you enjoy film noir, slower paced drama with clever turns of phrase, and the patience to get through the first half, this works in a pinch.
After 10-15 minutes, I turned it off. Painfully slow and sounded like it was recorded in an echo chamber.
They try so hard to be stylish, but this movie just stunk. The script has these stretches of ripped-off 40's era noir blabbering that just drive you nuts. It's also boring and has unnecessary scenes of gratuitous violence. But gee, the African-American character gets a job at the end! That's real realistic for 1940's Hollywood.
3.0 stars; Yes. This movie was slow moving, and a little dull. Liam Neeson would not be my pick to play Marlowe. However, I thought Jessica Lange has enough left in the tank to give a good performance. Overall, I thought it did a good job of creating the Raymond Chandler environment of Philip Marlowe.... a lot of clever short quips and comebacks, with a little bit of fisticuffs and shootings to pick up the tempo. Also, I thought it did an excellent job creating the period in which the story takes place. Even though the plot was not from a Philip Marlow novel, it did serve to create enough mystery, if you were patient, to get keep you guessing to the end. Just don't take my word for everything. I have some bias. I'm a Raymond Chandler fan and have read most of the Marlowe series.. Otherwise, we would be talking 2 or 2.5 stars.
A good cast and production values but the movie was ruined by a poor script, poor directing and mediocre acting.
Stale movie with nothing to contribute to the genre. That they named it Marlowe when the movie has nothing to do with the main character tells you how uninterested the crew was in making this.
