MaXXXine Reviews
Maxxxine (2024) is a delight for movie buffs who recognize the pop culture references portrayed in the film. It is a clear allusion to the 1980s cinema..[Full review in Spanish]

Maxine Minx may be a movie star, but she deserves a better movie than MaXXXine to serve as her big break.
| Original Score: D+ | Feb 26, 2025
Taken together with writer-director Ti West’s two previous films — 'X' and 'Pearl' ... — 'MaXXXine' is the culmination of a blood-drenched pop-culture meditation on the complicated relationship between ambition and morality.

A tale of one woman taking her shot-while taking out anyone who steps in her way-carries a signature allure due to Mia Goth’s willingness to embrace and fully inhabit this character. She's the reason Ty West's series sings.

A De Palma-esque thriller with notes of horror drenched in blood, neon signs, and grime, which, in addition to cementing Mia Goth as, arguably, the greatest scream queen of the moment, proves that perfect trilogies do exist.

An excellent third in a trilogy, and stands on its own as a solo film.

It doesn’t add up to much, largely because the character of Maxine feels painfully undernourished. There’s not a smidgen of humor or even irony in Goth’s joyless performance.

There are some great images, and a couple of superb set pieces. But this is a film that absolutely could have used another rewrite and another 20 minutes of runtime.

All in all, MaXXXine gets lost in its own meta “film within a film within a film” lineage and ultimately gives an “A+” final girl a “B-” finale.

Writer-director Ti West’s 2022 twofer of X and Pearl proved to be so potent that they collectively filled a slot on my year-end 10 Best list. So where does that put MaXXXine, the final film in the trilogy? Way back in the caboose, alas.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 20, 2024
The longer the film goes on, the more confused its message gets, while the most interesting aspects of the story (Maxine’s characterization and West’s commentary on Hollywood) get lost in the mix of farcical murder plots and over-the-top character work.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Oct 8, 2024
Yes, it’s trash, but self-conscious trash that takes delight in playing with all the familiar tropes of slasher films.

There are some great performances, some stand out scenes, excellent music, and it all moves at a clip. But no artist should be aiming for “fine enough” (and, in fact, few artists do) and it’s hard not to mourn the wasted potential in West’s film.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 13, 2024
When so many modern horror films often find themselves afraid of pushing barriers to avoid being labeled as exploitative, either with violence or subject matter, MaXXXine proves that you can do so in a way that brings out something valuable in the genre.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Sep 3, 2024
While MaXXXine is more flawed than its predecessors, it’s still an engaging, over-the-top, of-the-era stab at horror, and marks an overall triumph of filmmaking by West who, like his on-screen star, has finally cracked Hollywood.

West and Goth reissue their ideology in which cinema once again acts as a medium and a message at the same time. [Full review in Spanish]

Without being the best of the trilogy, MaXXXine succeeds in its playful evocation of some of the darkest and satanic legends in the history of Los Angeles through a trashy, eighties lens. [Full review in Spanish]

Mia Goth dazzles once again as the quintessential scream queen of modern cinema... [Full review in Spanish]

Like 'Taxi Driver', with which it establishes some parallels, 'MaXXXine' comments on the sick society of the time, focusing on religious fanaticism, repression, puritanism, and violence against women. [Full review in Spanish]

Aside from its stylized aesthetic that faithfully reproduces 1980s American culture, it is a slasher horror film that lacks some punch in its violent chronicle about the price of fame. [Full review in Spanish]
