MaXXXine Reviews

Apr 18, 2025

MaXXXine wraps up the "X" trilogy with style, blending dark comedy with twisted horror. Mia Goth is fantastic, though the storyline feels a little uneven in places. Still, it's visually impressive, edgy, and entertaining.

'MaXXXine' is a positive end (?) to this trilogy of Ti West-directed flicks. I'd rank it below the prior releases, but that's simply because I enjoyed those ones more. This one is absolutely a good movie, yet again Mia Goth and the visuals are my biggest elements to praise. Away from the splendid Goth, Kevin Bacon is the one I liked most from the rest; he plays a successfully sleazy dude. Away from them, I wanted to see more of Giancarlo Esposito, while Michelle Monaghan and Bobby Cannavale are solid; Elizabeth Debicki too (still can't unhear Diana, mind). The conclusion underwhelmed me, I won't lie. The reveal and just the way the plot goes in general just didn't really click with me. I wouldn't at all say it's explicitly a bad ending, it just didn't give me proper satisfaction. All in all, I did have a good time watching this and the series overall. One to recommend, for sure.

From Texas to Tinseltown. The third entry in the “X” trilogy is the first time the series starts to show symptoms of sequelitis. It nails the retro horror camp aspect that “X” perfected, but feels lacking in originality compared to the two previous, boundary-pushing films. Mia Goth stays slaying throughout this series; whether playing Maxine or Pearl she consistently delivers a distinct, unhinged performance as woman seeking vengeance on the systems keeping them from stardom. Despite being a solid 1980s period piece with an intriguing enough premise, its pacing inconsistencies and retreading of themes make it a steep step down from the previous two films.

Hollywood work, strong direction, engaging plot, thrilling horror, good performance of cast and overall pretty good movie.

I saw this on a plane. I was very excited for it to come out, then I heard some disappointing reviews and failed to see it in the theaters as planned. Instead, I read the Wiki summary and decided, based on that summary, to agree with assessments that it was underwhelming. No, I did not find this film to be scary. But -- and I am no expert, of course -- that's not what makes me love or hate a horror film. For instance, in Silence of the Lambs, it is more the fascinating dynamic between Agent Starling and Dr. Lecter that makes it a timeless classic than any of the horrific elements. This film said very clever things about fame, picking up from the previous installments in the series. There were very satisfying moments throughout. The performances, particularly by Mia Goth, were incredibly enjoyable. The film was visually and stylistically hypnotic. I realize this won't speak to everyone, but the LA-ness of the film was very enjoyable. Actually, this should speak to everyone, because it's a film and a trilogy about fame and its pursuit, and the arrival at the center of the pursuit -- and ultimately (not really a spoiler) at the center of that center -- is charged with poesy and thoughtfulness. I think what makes Mia Goth's acting so compelling is -- like Isabelle Huppert and other such actresses -- there is simultaneously a great awareness of every little flourish and a melting into the character that must be very difficult to achieve. I regret not having seen this on a big screen. And I hope that everyone involved in this will continue to make things worth watching. And I will be more mindful about not letting other people's expectations affect whether I give a film a chance.

Mia goth Is great, and the film does take you to the 80s visually, but still there was no point to this film, the story doesn't really work; this new wave of bizarre presented as art is not always the best idea 💡, there are many stories worth producing.

Loved this movie! I saw it twice in theaters and purchased it when it became available to buy and stream. I don’t know why it has quite a bit of bad reviews. Some parts were ridiculous, but the 80s vibe it brings really gives nostalgia. This was definitely the best out of X and Pearl. The ending was inspirational. I would love to see it again in theaters if it becomes available to watch on the big screen sometime.

Very much in the same tone as the previous 2 deliveries in the "X" trilogy. Entertaining, violent, funny in its own original way

A poor end to the trilogy. X and Pearl were never Oscar worthy but certainly held their own. I kind of feel this movie didn’t need to be made - certainly not like this anyway. It’s kind of just really odd. - How it’s shot seems very pretentious at times. It kind of makes pearl the hero and the villain her dad .. which was a terrible plot. She didn’t really seem to play this mad woman like in pearl, more just this hippy chick. I was thinking she was gonna go round murdering people who didn’t give her roles. It’s worth a watch if you like the others but that’s it.

Esta película me sorprendió y no pensé que lo iba hacer. Pude identificarme con Maxi y su historia, y algo que recalcó es su forma de afrontar las cosas.

Didn’t really like it. Won't recommend

Nowhere near as good as X and Pearl. This was very weak to end the trilogy

Probably one of the worst movies I have watched in my life. It is really surprising that so many good actors accepted to be part of such a lazy movie. It seems they really needed the money, after all.

It's shot great and pays huge detail and respect to its era. Acting is done mostly well. A solid third entry. Goth delivers another good performance. Bacon is deliciously disgusting.

A solid close to the X trilogy that solidifies Ti West as a Grade A horror director, and Mia Goth as an absolute gem of an actress. Her ability to commit to each of the roles she’s played in this trilogy is impressive to watch.

Mikey’s Movie Review: Maxxxine (2024) While the last part of director Ti West’s ‘X’ trilogy doesn’t quite stick the landing, with another mesmerising performance Mia Goth (as Maxine) proves yet again she’s one of the most exciting actors to emerge in the last 5 years… A direct sequel to ‘X’ (the 2nd film ‘Pearl’ being a prequel), things get off to an intriguing start with Eliot Rockett’s trashy VHS looking, era defining cinematography, a handful of standout scenes and a fun soundtrack. Sadly, around the half-way mark, it all starts to feel slightly undercooked. The connecting themes of ambition and morality are present and correct, yet some story threads entice and tease and ultimately go nowhere. Such as Giancarlo Esposito’s quirky cameo as Maxine’s agent Teddy Night, who will literally do anything for his Nr.1 client (including murder) yet we get no inclination or hint as to why? Presumably Detectives Williams (Michelle Monaghan) and Torres (Bobby Cannavale) know something about Maxine’s involvement in the events of ‘X’, but it’s barely mentioned. While the less said about Kevin Bacon’s bizarre turn as a detective ‘working’ for a copycat serial killer the better… The film itself could maybe have benefited from another pass at the script - especially the third act which jumps well and truly over the shark! It’s a botched ending that with a bit more care could have rounded out a perfect modern horror trilogy. Ultimately, your enjoyment of this will depend on how much you’ve enjoyed the ride, Goth’s delightful presence throughout and at least a bare knowledge of straight-to-video 80’s slasher pics and a love of grindcore cinema. Hopefully West has more tricks up his sleeve and Goth will earn her place as more than just a scream queen… Mikey’s Movie Rating: 3/5*

The first two thirds of the film are a lot of fun but the reveal is incredibly weak, uninteresting and completely takes the power away from what has been a VERY interesting character.  The cult aspect of the film was not interesting or rewarding. The cop characters become clownish idiots, it just fizzled out.  Still a fun first 2/3. But nothing compared to “X” or “Pearl”
