Megalopolis Reviews
Megalopolis is a brave independent exploration of creativity that can be more easily enjoyed when accepted for what it is.

A verbose, bombastic, overloaded and at the same time, yes, fascinating film.[Full review in Spanish]
| Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 1, 2025
Megalopolis is chaotic, but it initially feels as though Coppola is in control of it. And then, not unlike a certain empire the filmmaker is obsessed with, cracks start to form and the center can no longer hold.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jan 17, 2025
...amid or perhaps beneath the chaos, the film is constructed almost entirely from clichés.
| Jan 15, 2025
... dominated by constant quotes from great thinkers, overblown and significant dialogues, and by a habit of overacting, it completely moves away from any hint of realism or precision to strongly embrace that idea of a fable. [Full review in Spanish]

That is the essence of Megalopolis: a wake-up call, a bottle in the sea of apathy, a cinema that subverts the onanistic experience of contemporary entertainment for one that connects us with an open, utopian, and... imperfect view.[Full review in Spanish]
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 7, 2025
A tiring funhouse of hopes, dreams, and desires somewhat wasted in Coppola's attempts at his own Citizen Kane odyssey, yet saved by its performances.
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Jan 2, 2025
Coppola's ambition is buried under the rubble of what could have been a great city. [Full review in Spanish]

Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis is a fascinating “mess,” existing primarily as an epic, must-see, PLF-worthy ode to its own existence.
| Original Score: 6/10 | Dec 11, 2024
Sometimes beautiful, at other times, horrible; inspired by mythology, history, philosophy and theatre, but also by the digital aesthetics of 21st-century superhero cinema; energetic in some instances, but tedious in others. Full review in Spanish.

The more I try to meet this movie where it is, the more issues I have with its execution of (many) ideas and ideals. Coppola said this was supposed to bring hope to society, but it's feeling a bit more like a nightmare.
| Nov 24, 2024
a great, sprawling folly—a film of such simultaneous ambition and foolhardiness that it is hard to separate where one begins and the other ends
| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 24, 2024
Francis Ford Coppola's long-in-the-making passion project collapsed under its own weight.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Nov 23, 2024
Give Megalopolis some concrete concrete concrete shoes, and a push off the plank.

An inevitably failed film (Full review in spanish)
| Original Score: 4/10 | Nov 15, 2024
Its ideas are obscured by a tonally uneven narrative. A fable lost in its own ambition. [Full Review in Spanish]

Whether Megalopolis has the kind of critical afterlife its filmmaker clearly hopes it will, there’s a sweet quality to its hopefulness in the face of things trending down in every direction, and a gentleness to its commitment to the family...
| Original Score: 3/4 | Nov 11, 2024
Visually the film is breathtaking, and it is here that Coppola shines. The man has fourteen Academy Award nominations and five Oscars and his place in the history of cinema is assured.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 10, 2024
In Megalopolis, love and grief become deep, ungovernable forces that empower memories and actions while threatening to overwhelm at every turn... The effect, and Driver’s often-mysterious but always grounded performance, is overwhelmingly poignant.

"Despite its striking production design and alluring setting, the film falters with a fragmented narrative that keeps audiences from fully connecting with its characters and storylines." [Full Review in Spanish]
