Midway Reviews

Midway seems to be a movie that is better suited for the serious movie lover who will enjoy a movie that is more about historically correct then it is being there for entertainment.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 29, 2024

The focus of a war film should be on the men and women who fight and for what they are fighting. Without that setup, Midway is just a spectacle of violence.

| Original Score: C | Aug 1, 2024

'...even if involvement with individuals is not great, the whole spectacle is highly impressive. David Mamet’s suggesting that a blockbuster movie is more like a pageant than a story applies here... a living tableau of deep blue hero action…’

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 4, 2024

Midway is a respectful homage to the people who fought in the Battle of Midway, but it fails to deliver an engaging story with compelling characters. It's a shame that a visually impressive film possesses such an emotionally dull story.

| Original Score: C+ | Jul 24, 2023

The Battle of Midway is one of the most amazing stories in military history and I was very pleased to see a new film featuring that story. MIDWAY (2019) is the rare war film that gets more points for historic accuracy than for entertainment.

| Original Score: 8/10 | Sep 16, 2022

Yes, “Midway” gives us the occasional line of dialogue that seems pulled from the John Wayne era, but it’s still a fitting and fun way to remember those who fought and sacrificed in a signature battle in American military history.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 24, 2022

Midway is your CGI-filled, mildly suspenseful, poorly written substitute that at least honors real-life American heroes

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 22, 2022

As usual, Emmerich puts on a pirotecnic spectacle that reaches its peak in the dogfight sequences, but I'm afraid his narrative flounders in water by repeating the superfluous conflicts of soldiers responding to the call of duty. [Full review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 5/10 | Jun 10, 2022

While Midway isn’t a complete failure, Emmerich fails to bring anything new to the table, making this a truly generic entry.

| Original Score: 5/10 | May 19, 2022

I really appreciate the handling of Pearl Harbor.

| Sep 16, 2021

It's not a gritty war film, it's a big battle movie and as such is fine.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 20, 2021

Evaluating all its edges, Midway has a positive balance. It walks with ease between two antipodes that seem antagonistic: war and spectacle. Emmerich manages to recreate a critical moment in the history of United States [Full review in Spanish]

Midway's biggest sins are how it both failed to translate this to the screen effectively, and in so doing, leaving us longing for Michael Bay.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 2, 2021

Despite so many characters - including a wealth of Japanese officers - there's no emotional connection to any of the cookie-cutter personas.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Dec 7, 2020

It is a real shame that Midway does not succeed as it certainly promises a lot with its talented cast and its well-worn story. Instead, the film just crashes and burns; failing to meet its lofty goals halfway.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 23, 2020

It might make a worthy Veterans Day watch if you bring your veteran grandparent or war-buff parent. You'll remember the experience with your loved ones more than the actual movie.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jul 24, 2020

World War II turns into, as Scorsese would have called it, a 'theme-park ride' in Midway.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 24, 2020

An over-long, dated, old-fashioned war drama, with an overkill of digital effects and tedium.

| Original Score: C | Jul 12, 2020

Just because a movie is thoroughly watchable doesn't mean it's particularly good.

| Jul 6, 2020

I can see that he really wanted to pull off a good old-fashioned World War II movie that feels earnest and straight to the point. It's just that Emmerich is never known as a credible storyteller.
