Midway Reviews
This is a bad movie. The special effects and the battle scenes, are particularly bad. Really bad. Embarrassingly bad. If you don't already know the history of Midway, well a lot of the movie doesn't make sense. The characters are sort of bland stereotypes.
Even though all I expected was a Emmerich popcorn movie, it just wasn't good. The CGI was bad. Lead actor choice was questionable. Dialogue was horrific. Story was confusing and you couldn't really tell what was happening in the context of the battle and how it relates to the overall importance of the war. It could have been so much better.
What an abysmal film! The acting is really bad, the storyline is all over the place and the CGI reminds me of films from the 80's! Did have high hopes for it but was left severely disappointed and as such would not recommend it.
Midway deserves some kind of negative rating. It is amazing how something this terrible could have gotten approved to filming. The dialog is dreadful. There are cliche "hot shot" rulebreakers. The CGI is terrible, so bad that the cuts between live and CGI are jarring. There are anachronisms, such as ships at Pearl Harbor having Oelikon guns. This fln has no redeaming values at all.
I've seen most of the WWII-inspired films that Hollywood has put out over the years, but I had missed this one. Since it was streaming on Netflix, I figured that 6 years late was better than never. Overall, my impressions were very favorable towards this film. When it comes to war, it is very difficult to accurately represent on film and carries a huge burden with it. A burden to tell the stories of real life heroes, political motivations, what we did right/wrong and to accurately portray all sides of a conflict. Although the scope of Midway is very limited, it seemed to do a good job overall at telling this particular story, a microcosm of WWII. The acting was decent, the effects and sequences were amazing, and overall the story was mostly understandable. I think more can be done in films like this to help the audience better follow the strategies being employed by both sides, and a better geographical representation so that we can become more fully immersed in how the battles played out. Overall though, this is a very ambitious and impressive war film and I will definitely watch it again in the future.
If you love action, if you love WW2 movies..watch this! Better than 90% of Hollywood movies being made today! Loved It!
Perhaps not the smoothest film. And it doesn't have a particularly outstanding score. However, it offers some great spectacle, and also does a good job showing how intense and terrifying the events were that this film is based on truly were. It also shows us both perspectives, and I appreciate the more nuanced approach.
To much CGI in the movie…
Midway is engrossing from beginning to end. Excellent acting, engaging and believable characters based on real people, and fantastic special effects and cinematography. The Japanese characters, especially Yamamoto, are a good counterpoint to the American main characters. As somebody who grew up on the great films of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, this film is a throwback for its quality and entertainment value. I am surprised that the critics rate this so low. Trust the 92 percent user rating of 10,000 people as a good indication of the quality of this movie.
Starts with a bang and doesn't let up. A war movie with heart, brains and brawn. Entertaining, exciting and chock full of details that will keep even the most studious WW2 buff interested. A great cast does justice to the true heroes who lived it. Highly recommended.
Such an underrated movie, it’s phenomenal. The critics bad ratings coupled with the audience’s high rating should say it all.
Streaming definitely the way to watch midway so you can skip through the family drama parts that are filler. The military sections are what makes it worth watching.
Midway is a serviceable war documentary, but not an especially entertaining or cohesive film. So many scenes feel either superfluous or disconnected and offer bare bones of information. I suspect half the story got left on the cutting room floor. The film director really should have stuck to the key characters and events that led to the Battle of Midway and cut out the other parts of the Pacific Theater. It would have improved the pacing and left more room for more intimate and emotional exploration of the characters and their relationships. Also I had to keep turning on subtitles to understand Japanese dialogue, which was annoying. I hope the people who watched this film in theaters got subtitles. I predict your enjoyment of this film will depend entirely on your interest in the history of the Battle of Midway. If you are hoping for a compelling war drama (or a sweeping war romance), you will be disappointed.
Shows the incredible sacrifices made by the American service men and women (and their family members). Very powerful and moving watching the actors portray the bonds of patriotic duty. This movie does a great job of showing the incredible cat and mouse games played behind the scenes by the American military intelligence. The disciplined and powerful Japanese navy ran directly into the brave Americans who were resolute and energized following the tragedy at Pearl Harbor. This movie is uplifting and helped us feel a deeper appreciation for our hard fought freedoms.
25 minutes into the film I decided that it was possibly the worst over-acted film I've seen for a long time. The American characters were all paper-thin caricatures of gung-ho blue collar and cowardly white-collar. The main character was SO unbelievably insubordinate and unbelievably intense that it frankly annoyed me that a director chose to present these characters with so little character.
Wouldn’t say it’s an amazing Oscar winning movie but as an American history nerd it is one of many important stories to be told to honor the brave men who gave it all for us. Good watch
Being a WW2 history buff I understand this is a Hollywood made story and not accurate in its entirety. Could not help to think the bravery captured by all major players was spot on. This millennial was teary eyed thinking at times thinking about the loss and bravery at Midway. Great movie! Glad to see Hollywood pay homage to that last great generation.
Bad dialogue. Bad CGI. I'm a pilot & instructor. All of the flying scenes are ridiculous. Find & watch the original WWII movies
Midway - 7/10. Roland Emmerich is a director well known for his spectacle based filmmaking. Movies like Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and 2012 are perfect examples of movies that focus on their strengths and try not to overachieve in the story departments. In terms of war films, Midway is a good example of this as well. Story wise, the film isn't breaking any new ground that hasn't been shown in any other previous war films. What Midway does well is its presentation of its warfare footage. An aerial based war film, we follow the story of the army as they must retaliate against the Japanese after the attack on Pearl Harbor. After his last few films underachieved in the box office, Roland had to resort to self producing this film, and it shows. The aerial fight scenes look incredible, but there are a number of scenes which clearly look like it was shot in front of a green screen. The Pearl Harbor sequence doesn't have striking imagery or the same impact as Michael Bay's film on that incident, but the rest of the film's war scenes certainly leave an impact. The performances from the ensemble cast is on the whole reliable, with some of the performances borderline cliches. Music by Harold Kloser is good and suitable for the mood of the film. Even though this is technically an independent film, the production value still feels grand and very convincing. Midway is a good film if you want spectacle, but if you're expecting a good story, don't expect something along the lines of Saving Private Ryan or The Thin Red Line
Just because you have CGI capabilities doesn't mean you overuse them. This movie completely overused them to the point it looked like a video game. As for Ed Skrein, he's an overacting, cliche ridden actor/character. Can't get passed his constant scowl and cowboy attitude. As for storyline, this was unnecessary.
