Midway Reviews
Why did Emmerich want to remake this battle, 77 years after the fact, if he did not have enough money?... We didn't need a new one, unless he had something new to say or a new way to say it. To both questions, the answer is no.

...there's still a sizeable audience ready to experience, from the comfort of a cinema seat, a skilfully made approximation of what the Allies had to face in the horror that was World War II.

Midway asks very little of its audience aside from mindless military worship and purposeless nostalgia.

The digitized combat looks like something traced and transplanted from another war, one that took place in a galaxy far, far away.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Nov 22, 2019
There wasn't any tension or suspense, and by the time things came to an end I was almost thankful the movie was over.

He's Mr. Bombastic, but he's not very fantastic...

It has the tone, mostly, of kids' 온라인카지노추천. Or a poor, very poor, supplementary video for a history GCSE.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Nov 11, 2019
Every tired war movie cliche is unearthed in a film that brings nothing new but will no doubt please fans of men in uniform yelling at explosions.

At the end of the day, I think I like Henry Fonda's [Midway] better.

It's hard to imagine, if you've already seen a film like Pearl Harbor, why you would need to see Midway.
| Nov 8, 2019
Midway is a choppy bore, its main source of intrigue centred around whatever New Jersey-ese accent British actor Ed Skrein is attempting as dive bomber Richard Best.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 8, 2019
"Midway" is a rollicking war film. HIstory buffs need not apply.
| Original Score: B- | Nov 8, 2019
"Midway" tells a story that's vividly and viscerally rendered, with all the entertainment value of a big, old-fashioned war movie, cutting back and forth between the home front and front line.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Nov 8, 2019
The film is filled with characters, with only a couple fleshed out in any real way, the rest just faces and sometimes names. The result is a movie about a dramatic battle that's strangely bloodless and unemotional.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Nov 8, 2019
The overabundance of CGI is one of the bigger problems with Midway because, far too often, it feels like you're watching a video game or an F/X highlight reel.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 8, 2019
Ambiguity is not its goal, nor is nihilism its motivating philosophy. It aims to celebrate heroism, sacrifice, determination and grit, and if you don't like that it really does not care.

Skrein makes Best the quintessential American hero, cool under pressure, confident, a bit of a cowboy.
| Original Score: B+ | Nov 8, 2019
These terrific actors and many more are stuck playing one-dimensional characters who have to deliver lines straight out of a second-rate, mid-20th century war movie, while competing with 21st century CGI pyrotechnics.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 7, 2019
Midway isn't a movie about World War II. It's a movie about World War II movies.

Roland Emmerich's take on an epic WW2 naval battle dive bombs on screen by thinking plastering the latest in digital effects over the same war-time movie tropes constitutes a movie. It does not.
