Miller's Crossing Reviews

Apr 6, 2025

Milliner's ! Crossing more like. It's good, until you realise it's crap, if you catch my drift.

Sombrio, seco e frio....

Very Neo noir in style. Dubious morality, existentialism, nihilism plus comic send-up moments of gangster movie tropes. Gabriel Byrne is the the ‘homme fatal’ alongside a magnificent femme fatale actress. Lots of unexpected twists and turns. Great slang. Never heard ‘what’s the rumpus’ before. Beautifully filmed. Another Coen Brothers chef d’oeuvre!!

With dialogue so sharp it should come with a safety warning, this movie is amazing. If I had to declare my favourite film across all genres, this would be a very strong contender. Wonderful performances from a truly super cast........... so many stand out scenes..... and that script....... close to perfect.

Even though the story can be a bit hard to follow at times, the amazing style makes up for it. A great early film from the Coens that has beautiful cinematography and is one of the more interesting takes on the mafia film that I've seen.

I recently bought the Criterion collection edition and enjoyed the film. I watched it many years ago on VHS but wasn’t into the Genre at the time. Years later I like it a lot better. As a longtime Coen brothers fan, I had to revisit it. I don’t think it’s their best movie, but has great characters and acting.

The second best movie to have ever been made. Coen brothers at the top of their game. Acting, plotting, scenery...superb.

Excellent piece of gangster noir. Harkens back the older gangster movies of the 30s, 40s...

All Time Classic. This has all the hallmarks of a Noir. The script is very complicated but never convuluted and to where you can't follow it which is a testament to the masterful editing. Only real complaint is while the music is good I wish it was used a bit more but this really is never dry. Everyone should give this a try once.

What's the rumpus? Oh, it's about this unique gangster flick by the legendary Coen brothers! The right hand of an Irish mob boss finds himself in the crosshairs of a dangerous turf war over an untrustworthy bookie and tries to navigate both sides to stay alive and protect his boss. Fascinating dialogue and morally-questionable characters make this an introspective and impressive crime epic that not many people remember!

Tied with Barton Fink for my favorite Coen brothers flick, this is a perfect gangster film. The runtime really keeps things moving quickly as these types of movies are usually longer, which I almost wish this one was. I didn't want it to end. The dialogue and pacing is just perfect, keeps you clinging to the edge of your seat. The characters are deep, complex and over the top in the best way.

An absolute dark comedy of a gangster film.

It was pretty entertaining in spite of being one of my least favorite Coen brothers movies. It's worth the watch.

I liked that I didn't have to put a lot of effort into this film to enjoy it. Sometimes, that's what you really need in a film.

This may be one of the best gangster films I have ever seen. There's not much action but the drama and acting is so on point. Gabriel Byrne and John Turturro are so freakin' good in this film. The Cohen Brothers always make great movies and this may be their biggest hidden gem. Grade: 96/100 A

The Coen Brothers could be said to have talent beyond their years, with their earliest films already demonstrating a strong grasp on the cinematic medium. I watched Barton Fink a few week ago and really enjoyed it's blending of surreal imagery and sardonic humour. Miller's Crossing, the film that indirectly led to the creation of Barton Fink, is a moody, well-acted, complex tale of mob rivalries in the prohibition era. It's understandable that all the twists and turns the story takes would baffle the Coens so much that they had to write an entirely different film just to get back on track. It's a hard film to keep up with plot wise, but I feel like that was largely the point. It would be tough trying to wrap your head around all the facets of high rolling gangster life. All the subordinates under your command, all the companies who pay you protection, all the people who might double cross you, all the folk who might try to have you whacked. There's a lot to consider when you're in that role, and Tom's ability to use their egos and paranoia against them makes up the backbone of the story. It's a smart and in-depth analysis of the power struggle, hierarchies and backstabbings that were rife during the time period, and while I enjoyed Barton Fink more as an overall viewing experience, Miller's Crossing is still a distinguished entry in the Coen brother's filmography.

One of the greatest noir films of all time, Miller's Crossing is probably the Cohen's greatest film. Byrne's performance is spellbinding, and stands out among terrific performances by Finney, Marcia Gay Harden, John Turturro, Steve Buscemi. Brilliantly shot, blocked, edited realization of a great screenplay, it's one of the 100 greatest films of all time.
