Mr. Holmes Reviews
An unlikely friendship Holmes forms with his housekeeper's young son (child actor Milo Parker) proves especially affecting.

"Modern science" as such was not responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki-modern capitalist society, and specifically, American imperialism, was to blame.

Only the wonderful work of Ian McKellen manages to give authenticity to a film that falls far short of achieving its objective. [Full Review in Spanish]

It's a successful character study, as well as a clever mystery, even if it isn't all that gripping as a whole.
| Apr 8, 2020
Mr. Holmes is understated and intimate, and it examines one of the most famous fictional characters through an interesting new lens.

Suspense and sleuthing are a backstory to this elegant tale of regret, rectification and humility.
| Aug 15, 2019
Mr. Holmes just about gets the job done thanks to McKellen and Parker, but too many mediocre elements ensure this affair is a sad waste of a strong concept.
| Original Score: 2/5 | May 17, 2019
Mr. Holmes is an exceptional and unique addition to the vast collection of Sherlock Holmes' journeys, rich with respect for its predecessors and bold in its thoughtful and reflective approach.
| Original Score: A | May 10, 2019
It is far from a perfect but I enjoyed it.
| Original Score: C+ | Apr 26, 2019
McKellen, delivering his inimitable drawl, is inevitably the star attraction here. He doesn't have to speak to have his presence felt, he can frown and find audiences laughing, and Jeffrey Hatcher's script sparkles in his hands.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 5, 2019
Condon and Hatcher were just the men to bring this atypically humanistic vision of Sherlock Holmes from book to screen, and Mr. Holmes is a movie I'll be itching to revisit for years.
| Original Score: 8.5/10 | Mar 13, 2019
McKellen is such a commanding presence that he keeps "Mr. Holmes" interesting, even when the story comes close to losing the audience.

Just go see it. This film is intelligent and well-constructed, brilliantly acted and visually beautiful. Do not go into this expecting a Holmes-and-Watson solve-the-case Baker Street whodunit; this story is more about the man than the mystery.
| Original Score: 8/10 | Nov 1, 2018
You may never have to leave the drawing room for this mystery, but at least that room is tastefully and beautifully decorated.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Oct 31, 2018
A beautifully portrayed story about aging and redemption that anyone can appreciate, no matter their level of Holmes mania.
| Aug 23, 2018
McKellen succeeds in spades, charming us in one moment with his crotchetiness and breaking our hearts with his fear and weakness in another.
| Mar 16, 2018
Despite meticulous acting, Bill Condon's film fails to bring emotional heft to the tragedy of the aging and gradual disappearance of the human intellect.
| Jan 11, 2018
It is almost wholly down to McKellen that this Bill Condon-directed picture is still worth catching.
| Oct 30, 2017
Even hidden under pounds of make-up and doddering more than he needs to, McKellen turns in a touching performance.
| Oct 11, 2017
Mr. Holmes isn't another fast-paced adaptation of the character that pop-culture has become used to recently, but a quiet character piece that is radical in its introduction of a revisionist history for the character.
